My short notice trip to Huntsville yielded an awesome Apollo living history event. Konrad Dannenberg, whom many of you know from V-2, Redstone, and Saturn V development director fame - and an original Von Braun team member - celebrated his 95th birthday at the US Space & Rocket Center. Imagine him, surrounded by both a V-2 missile and an F-1 engine, sharing his incredible journey with everyone. His wife Jackie (a collectSPACE contributor, I believe) and family stood proudly alongside.

I couldn't believe I got to shake the hand of one of leaders of the original German rocket team. Plus, our young Space Camp grad was equally thrilled, especially when he told her: "you'll be a brilliant engineer, young lady"

Mr Dannenberg now uses a wheelchair, but is otherwise unchanged in his brilliance and incredible recall. His aristocratic German accented speech is clear and precise. He lamented that it now takes a while to get to the White Sands range, as he can no longer fly. He and Jackie are fully engaged in USSRC outreach, and it is wonderful they celebrated this life milestone surrounded by both his work, and young aerospace enthusiasts.

If I remember correctly, I had a 1 hour lecture from him about rocket propulsion at Space Camp back in 1984. Very low key and very informal. Just our 9 campers at the time. We sat on the ground around him in a semi-circle while he imparted his genius. Also gave it to the nine other teams, so he did the same lecture 10 times a week, every week.

I, too, got the Dannenberg lecture as a Space Camp (Academy, at that point) in April 1986. I don't remember much of the lecture, but have a grainy picture I took using my cheap, old Kodak 110 film camera.

Cheers,

Kevin

I met Konrad at the Autograph show at KSC in June. I got a signed photo of Apollo 4 launching, which flew 4 days after I was born on Nov. 9, 1967.
Not Werner Von Braun, but close enough!

All times are CT (US)
