Which of the astronauts/cosmonauts have endured the highest radiation dose during their career... I know missions count together toward the "career dose of radiation". Anyone know the limit set by NASA ? |

Can't answer directly, but I know that Don Thomas was grounded for that reason. The Eastfrisian |

Isn't there a JSC Houston webpage on this? They just count accumulative exposures per astronaut/cosmonaut... I believe NASA never conducted a study of health effects from exposure to Space radiation nor from long duration zero-gravity (other than the medical follow-up during missions). ... |

Philip, Perhaps I misunderstand your comment, but just the oposite is true: NASA conducts very thorough studies of the health effects of radiation exposure, long-duration weightlessness and other space flight factors. Of course, they are never as exhaustive as we life scientists would prefer, but they are much more exhaustive than the astronauts would prefer! [Full disclosure: I am still the Deputy Program Scientist for NASA's Human Research Program, although posting from home on this vacation day, and not speaking officially for NASA. But if I were speaking officially, I would say the same thing.] ------------------ John Charles Houston, Texas |

Thanks for the reply Charles, in fact I meant research during long-duration expedition missions. I believe there's a medical set to test the impact of radiation by using a fluid with nanoparticles (to be injected in astronaut's body) which could be used during a 6 months mission onboard the ISS (although radiation levels cannot be compared to an interplanetary journey)... |
