Ike was the President ,Elvis the King, and seven all American guys were ready to explore outer space. Those were good times! http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/7232/scott7co.jpg http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/1595/scott13dk.jpg http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/148/scott28le.jpg

Thanks for the photos, carmelo.

I haven't seen that one of the six of us (plus Tibby, the samoyed) in forever. I love the way Rene looks.

The other two are LIFE pics.

In my research at Time-LIFE photo archives, I saw that the LIFE photographers had taken these intimate photographs, just of the couples, for all seven guys.

I laughed at some of my parents, shown in one series eating dinner around a low glass coffee table, sitting on pillows on the floor.

All very, you know, beatnik style. Except for one hopelessly unhip detail: there above the dinner knives were huge honking glasses of milk.

Yep, Scott. My mom has her arm around me. Scotty is in the back looking very happy. This seems to be 1959--so I'm four here.

But this is not Garden Grove, Calif. Looks like a rental house in Virginia, before we moved into officer's housing at Langley A.F.B. I vaguely remember the back steps pictured here.

{on edit: Rene Carpenter confirms that this is a rental house in the Virginia countryside--"a big brick house," is the way she described it--in the spring of 1959. We are waiting for housing to open up on base. The pics of Rene and Scott were taken at Langley in the study that was off to the right of the entryway. The living room was to the left.]

Dear Mrs Stoever, give my best regards to your mothers(and to your father too). The pictures are from "EPOCA",(an Italian Magazine, associated with "LIFE")October 4, 1959 ("La famiglia dell'Astronauta Carpenter.Da sinistra verso destra:La moglie Renč,la figlia Kristen di 4 anni,il figlio Jay di sette,Scott con la figlia Candace di due anni.Dietro il figlio Scotty di 9,ed il cane Tibby").Headline:"Im happy and proud to be his wife" "Sono felice ed orgogliosa di essere sua moglie(Those were times for a male)!Scott Carpenter (with john Glenn) was one of most popular Astronauts in Italy in early 60s (kids wished to be Glenn,Carpenter,Gagarin...or Marcello Mastroianni, but this is another story).

Thank you, carmelo, for the gift of the pictures and for the greeting to my parents, which I will happily relay to Rene and email to Scott, so he can see the pictures too.

Do the wives still keep in touch? (I realize Mrs. Slayton, Shepard and Cooper are gone.)

I understand that the first Mrs. Conrad, Jane, inaugurated a first wives club recently, for M-G-A era astronauts. They had their first get-together last year, IIRC.

Rene corresponds with Jo and Annie and was a surprise guest at Annie's 80th birthday party.

Looking at Slaytons office, it looks like he might have flown the E E Lightning. I'd like to know if he did, where when etc. Anyone any ideas?

I'm guessing, but I'm pretty sure that's Marge (Marj?) Slayton and her son Kent along with Jo Schirra and her daughter.
