From ITAR-TASS, machine-translated with 'smoothing' by James Oberg: quote: In the composition of the backup of the 12th basic expedition to the international space station, which must leave for orbit in the beginning of October, has occurred a replacement. In the beginning of August Aleksandr Lazutkin for medical indications was removed from the composition of the backup crew of ISS -12, instead of him Mikhail Turin was assigned, who had backed up the commander ISS -11 Sergey Krikalev now working in orbit of. In the backup team, despite the practice of changing the entire crew in the case of the disease of one person, this time occurred only one swap. Jeffrey Williams as before backs up NASA astronaut William McArthur, and as the understudy of the third space tourist Gregory Olsen appears the head of the Russian representation of the company "Space Adventures" Sergey Kostenko.

I hope that this merely a temporary grounding and that Lazutkin's condition can be remedied. Having survived the Mir calamities in 1997, it would be a real shame if he was unable to visit the ISS. |

From the Novosti Kosmonavtiki forum (a bad Babelfish translation from Russian):"However, in the beginning of August an unforeseen situation happened. Being located at the training session in the Johnson space center, on 9 August Aleksandr lazutkin suddenly felt badly. He was urgently delivered to the cardiological department of one of the hospitals of Houston, where he were located during several days. The Russian doctors who urgently arrived, established that to Aleksandr is required the comprehensive medical examination and the course of special treatment. On this basis he was removed from further training and removed from the composition of crew. In the middle of August A.Lazutkin returned to his native land, and now has passed inspection and maintains a regime specified by doctors." It seems to be some heart condition.

I've been very eager to see Lazutkin fly again. I was very sad to hear he was grounded and wish him a speedy recovery. |

A few days ago I was in Novosti Kosmonavtiki in Moscow and incidentally met with Lazutkin. He said he was grounded forever | |
