The episode of the children's TV classic featuring Buzz Aldrin finally aired today in our neck of the woods. I found it very entertaining, and my 2 year old was pretty enthused as well! For those of you who didn't see it, but are interested, the basic premise was this: Cookie Monster thought that the moon was a giant cookie, and wanted to go eat it. Buzz came on, and explained to Cookie that the moon was made of rock, and then (my favorite part) pulled out a piece of moon rock he just happened to have in his pocket for cookie monster to see. Aldrin then went on to talk about how the moon is such a great place to go ( they showed some great footage during this part as well). By the end, Cookie wanted to be an astronaut and go to other planets and stars to see if maybe they were cookies.
As a devoted Sesame Street viewer (mom of two young kids), I can say that Aldrin had more screen time than the average celebrity guest, taking part in segments throughout the show. I also very much liked seeing space exploration promoted to a new generation via a childrens program that is respected and reknowned the world over.
And although he didn't promote it on the show, it got me very excited about his upcoming children's book, which is out next month, I believe.
I should also say to those who are interested in catching a rerun of the episode (most pbs stations air the same handful of episodes throughout the month), the episode # is 4090. pbskids.org can connect you to the schedule of your local pbs station. It was a highly enjoyable episode for kids, space enthusiasts, or just the plain young at heart.
