I remember hearing that Ed white's widow Pat took her life years back. Is that true? |

Pat White remarried, but never got the relief she needed from losing Ed in the fire. I think her role is overplayed in FTETTM, but she was supposedly a woman of incredible beauty. The White's two children are involved n Scott Grissom's memorial services at the Cape, each year. I am given the impression that they too, believe their father was a victim of something shadey. Scott Grissom has an entire conspiracy to commit murder scenario worked out. While the objective analysis of NAA and NASA's roles in creating a fire-trap spacecraft has never been truely revealed (until S. Clemmons revealed what he experienced in other posts), you can be sure that nobody was incinerated on orders from James Webb, Deke Slayton, or Lyndon Johnson. BTW, Scott Grissom has been very courteous to me in private emails, but is "terse" with anybody who disagrees openly with his theories. SCott has never gotten over his Dad's death or treatment at the hands of those who made the film version of "The Right Stuff". I can't say I endorse his opinions, but I am glad his life is not my own. Scott, Mark, and Betty, have suffered enough.

I totally agree with Richard. Betty Grissom was very good to me early on in writing "Fallen Astronauts" but it was Scott Grissom who supplied many of the memories of his father and checked the final draft of the manuscript for any faults. Surprisingly, he allowed the supposition that the fire started (according to NASA) in that frayed wire below Gus's couch to pass muster. Scott can certainly go off the Richter scale with anyone who questions his theories or motives, but in every email to me he has been polite, interested and helpful.Ed White has a sister, and he also has a son and daughter. However all mail to them regarding Ed gets passed to Ed III, and he is not helpful or responsive in the slightest. He told me in two lengthy telephone conversations that he would give me family information and anecdotal material on the stipulation that we did not make any mention of the way in which his mother Pat White died (even though it had been revealed years before in Frank Borman's "Countdown" book). I faithfully kept my end of the "bargain," but after that he just refused to answer any of my emails, phone messages or letters requesting the promised material, and even when I sent him the manuscript to review he never replied. Martha Chaffee is still around, but is very loath to discuss anything to do with her beloved Roger or the fire. Their daughter Sheryl was most diligent and helpful to me in filling in some information gaps. Of course I'm in contact with other family members of all the fallen astronauts from that era, Paul, but I made each of them a firm promise I would not reveal their addresses or contact details. Sorry, but that was a commitment I gave out of respect for their wishes and their cooperation.
