There was quite a bit of talk about Dave's book before its release in England. What was Dave going to charge at the American release for signed copies? Almost everyone was saying that he was going to charge his full signing price. I decided to purchase one of the copies from England just in case they were right. I was pleased to get the signed copy and it did cost me just over 50$ by the time it was mailed to me. At the time I felt that I would never be able to get Leonov to sign it also. Then it was announced that he was going to Burbank. I was able to get someone to take the book to Burbank for me and get Leonov to sign it. Someone asked Leonov how many copies he had signed that weekend and he said about 50 so far. I think that was Saturday evening or Sunday morning. It has been estimated that he signed no more than 100 copies the whole weekend. Does anyone know if Leonov is planning on returning to the States to do some more book signings? I may have paid more for the English release but those who did had the chance to get Leonov to sign their copies. Mike |

Mike,When the book was first announced on Aurora's website, it was stated that the book would be signed for the additional 165.00 fee ( in addition to the cost of the book ) that Scott charges. There was also suppose to be a special leather bound edition signed by Scott for I believe 400.00. What happened to that ? Like others, I was not about to pay that outrageous price for a signed book here, when I could get them at cost from the U.K. I picked up several copies from the U.K., and also had Leonov sign them in LA. The books on CS are likely the US first editions. Glad to see Scott will be signing them at no extra cost. Keep in mind that the U.K. editions are the true first editions. I'm sure at some point, Leonov will do another show. Get some books now, and hold on to them until then. I'm buying 6 of the new books for the cost of what Scott usually charges for one signature. Does anyone know if Scott will be doing any sort of booksigning tour ? James |

As of now, according to his publisher, only the three events listed on Sightings (NASM, UHC, UHCL) have been scheduled. |

Hi James,I agree. With what was being posted about Dave Scott charging to sign his own book I decided to get the ones from England. I still think it was a good choice because I was able to add Leonov and I hope that everyone else has the chance to add Leonov too. The 20$ extra that I paid for the book from England is not going to break or make me and I am glad that Robert has been able to get Dave Scott to sign his book. That was great. I ordered The Way of Water from Robert and I am looking forward to owning that signed book also. Mike |

As the topic title seems appropriate, how about some feedback on the book itself?Personally I found it a good read, in particular in terms of seeing how the Russian and US programs developped. For me Leonov's insights into the way the Russian program worked and his opinions on the way they missed the chance to reach the moon first were the most interesting parts of the book. That, and the amazing hardships he went through as a child! What I found disappointing in Scott's part was that he didn't describe the detail of much of his missions. Maybe we've read about it elsewhere, but I'd still have liked to hear him describe each launch, each re-entry, and more detail on what it was like to fly each mission. In addition, he never really talks about the people he worked with. Even Jim Irwin is really just a shadow in the book. That said it's still a good book, and definitely a must for any space fan. It's just that I would have like to read more. For me the best astro-penned books are still "Carrying the Fire" - simply a great read by any standards - and "The All-American Boys" - because Walt actually gives his opinion on what happened in the program and on the people he worked with, allowing you to see what it was really like to be a part of it all. |

A VERY nice gentleman from the UK bought a book for my Dad and me from WH Smith. Here is their website: http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?isbn=0743231627&DB=220 The books I bought were actually signed. I did not know this, and they were about $35.00. Now understand, these were bought in late August, so this store's supply of signed books may be out. In addition, the lady at the store did not mention they were signed, but they might still have some signed copies. The phone number I dialed was +44 1394 285237. Since Paul Jenkinson picked up the books and met us in LA, I did not worry about shipping. ANYWAY, it may be worth a shot to call this store to see if they have any more signed copies. Good luck!!! |
