Sotheby's to offer Soviet robot-retrieved moon rocks at auction, again

The only known pieces of the moon to be collected from the lunar surface and be legally sold are returning to the auction block, 25 years after they were first offered.

The three tiny lunar pebbles, which were among a small cache of moon material brought back to Earth by a Soviet robotic probe in 1970, will headline Sotheby's space exploration-themed auction on Nov. 29 in New York City. The same moon rocks were previously sold by Sotheby's for $442,500.

There are some amazing items in this offering by Sotheby's. I wish that I was a winner in either one of the two big lottery drawings a few weeks back.

Soviet robot-retrieved moon rocks sell for $855,000 at Sotheby's

The going rate for moon rocks has changed for the first time in 25 years.

Sotheby's on Thursday (Nov. 29) auctioned the only known pieces of Earth's natural satellite to be collected from the lunar surface and be legally sold for $855,000. The three tiny pebbles were among a small cache of moon material that was brought back by the former Soviet Union's Luna 16 robotic probe in 1970.

Just won the flown Apollo 12 CSM malfunction procedures book. 112 pages, plus a large folding chart map, signed by Richard Gordon. First sold at Aurora's Spring 2005... for a lot less I suppose. But, I have that weird feeling that I'll only live once, so I'm delighted.

A big MERCI to Cassandra Hatton who was kind enough to send me the catalog for free overseas, even though my track record with Sotheby's space auctions is (was) much lower than with other auction houses.

Here is the original Aurora sale record for reference if you hadn't already found it.

Live Auctioneers is a great resource for anyone looking for old Aurora sale records. You may need to log in to view the prices realized, which is a free account.

Hey, thanks. In 2005 it sold for $6,600 including buyer's premium. I got it 13 years later for $17,500 (incl. BP). Considering all the low prices I had for some great artifacts in the 90's during the Aurora and Superior early days, I can't complain if I have to pay another range of prices now for the items I missed. Like everybody else. Next step, looking for a surface flown page.

The price you paid for that checklist is around $10,000 less than it was worth in my experience. You got a bargain.

You can't really compare prices fetched by items in the mid 2000s with today, but if you do it's worth noting that inflation would make that $6,600 in 2004 the equivalent of $8,546 today.

In any case it's a great buy.
