One of the major problems we all face with on-line auctions (apart from poor evaluation of forgeries and a/ps!) is the quality of reproduction in catalogues and PDFs. It is often impossible to see an autograph in a B&W catalogue and the online PDF versions aren't much better.

I've found two innovative auction houses recently whose approach alleviates this.

One, Signature House, sent it's catalogue on a CD with zoomable, high quality photos allowing the easy identification of two Armstrong forgeries! This must have the added benefits of being (a) cheaper for the auction house to produce and mail and (b) kinder to the environment.
The other, Heritage, have a superb tool on their website which allows zoom, focus and panning. You really can get right down onto the ink.

IMHO it's about time the specialised players adopted one or both of these ideas as it would make the evaluation process a lot easier AND save money.

Paul,

I couldn't agree more. I get annoyed by receiving heavy catalogues through the mail every month that have been flown half way around the world (burning precious oil on the way) for no good reason.

Either everything should be available online (close today but high-res closeups often absent) or even better, as Paul mentions, sent on a lightweight CD packed with detailed images.

I was talking about this with a friend who is an engineer in California.
He thinks the future will have some interesting ways of handling this.
You may actually have a digital "book" of pictures to flip through and carry around the room with you in a wireless fashion.
It would allow people to view an entire catalog as if it were a paper one.
Sounds like my kids will have some cool stuff when they are my age!
