Does anyone know why the engine nozzle/bell on the second stage has been shortened? It would seem to me that this is causing loss of efficiency given that it should have been optimized for use in a vacuum.

A shorter second stage nozzle will be used when SpaceX doesn't need as much performance to get the payload to its final destination (quoting SpaceX on Twitter).

One less expensive item you don't have to throw away. If it is not needed why build it, carry it, just to end up throwing it away.

Splashdown of Dragon confirmed, completing SpaceX's 28th cargo resupply mission to the space station!
Jackie called me at 10:25 a.m. reporting the double sonic boom over the house in Guyton Georgia. Said it was very loud and has all the dogs in the area barking.
