Today marks the 50th anniversary of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signing into law the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, setting into motion the creation of NASA as the nation's civilian space agency.
Some have chosen to use this day, rather than October 1 -- the date of NASA's first day of operation -- to celebrate the agency's 50th anniversary, too.
