A cafe' near my workplace faxes over their menu every day, and at the bottom they put what "day" each day is. For example, they put that today is "Final Frontier Day" because NASA was founded today. It didn't sound exactly right, so I just looked up the date on the NASA website, and they say it's October 1. My question is therefore: Was there a government declaration or other milestone that happened on this date that _led_ to NASA's founding, or is the cafe' just flat-out mistaken?I have to give them credit for trying to include space milestones...they did say it was "Moon Day" on July 20! -C |

The café is actually correct. Today, 46 years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, Public Law 85-568, which established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).It took until October 1 of the same year though, for NASA to be activated (and likewise NACA to be deactivated). |
