What are the chances of the next ISS crew (Exp-13) not having a U.S. astronaut included? |

ESA confirmed just this week that Reiter will not fly on Soyuz.Further, the station cannot support a three man long-duration crew unless the shuttle is flying. That is the only reason why Reiter didn't fly with Expedition 12 on Soyuz TMA-7 (Olsen would have been bumped to the next flight.) Recent news out of NASA suggests that other than Vinogradov, the other Expedition 13 crewmembers are subject to change, as is their back-up crew. Perhaps telling, the Houston Chronicle asked NASA at the pre-Expedition 12 launch briefing if their back-ups were the Expedition 14 crew; NASA spokesmen replied that it was under review... As of last week or so, Dan Tani was removed from the Expedition 13 crew for reasons I will not specify here.It is believed that Jeff Williams of Exp 14 could possibly take his place but nothing has been decided yet. As for Reiter, he is very likely to stick to 121; if not, then his next option would be the Soyuz after Shuttles start flying again. But not before. It is all but certain that they will stick to one Russian and one American until then. Finally, the third seat next March remains up in the air. It will not be Pontes. Pontes will be in this flight. The documents will be signed next week, during the visit of Lula, Brazil's president, to Russia. The rest of the crew is under review, but last time I checked there were two Russians.Cheers, Salvador |

From what I have read, the contract being signed places Pontes on the October 2006 TMA and that a Japanese tourist booked by Space Adventures will be taking the third seat in April; of course, that could have been outdated.[This message has been edited by Robert Pearlman (edited October 12, 2005).] |

I am very interested to know why Daniel Tani is no longer part of Expedition 13 ? Will it also mean the end of his flying career with NASA ?I recall that when Donald Thomas and Christopher Loria were removed from STS-113 in 2002, neither man ever flew again. |

I bet Dan Tani will probably get another chance to fly but probably on the shuttle only. Don Thomas and Gus Loria both were removed due to medical issues and with Dr Thomas- he went on to a management job and Gus would have flown but with the Columbia accident he was able to further his education and move on from NASA. |
