A former antenna package that mounted on the outside of the Kibo Exposed Facility at the International Space Station fell back to Earth on Friday (March 17), reports The New York Times.
The retired 700-pound communications antenna, called the Inter-orbit Communication System-Exposed Facility, went into space on a 2009 shuttle flight. About 10 percent of equipment like that might fall to Earth in small pieces, rather than melt on the way, Dr. [Jonathan] McDowell said.
The equipment came down in an uncontrolled re-entry, which means experts cannot predict where exactly the objects will land. Dr. McDowell said that pieces likely landed somewhere around Yosemite National Park.
