The space shuttle Challenger can be see at a distance in this STS-7 photo taken in 1983. There have been several similar photos of Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour taken on later flights.Has a similar photo of the shuttle Columbia ever been taken? |

STS071-S-072 is one of them: This view of the Space Shuttle Atlantis still connected to Russia's Mir Space Station was photographed by the Mir-19 crew on July 4, 1995. Cosmonauts Anatoliy Y. Solovyev and Nikolai M. Budarin, Mir-19 Commander and Flight Engineer, respectively, temporarily undocked the Soyuz spacecraft from the cluster of Mir elements to perform a brief fly-around. They took pictures while the STS-71 crew, with Mir-18's three crew members aboard, undocked Atlantis for the completion of this leg of the joint activities. Solovyev and Budarin had been taxied to the Mir Space Station by the STS-71 ascent trip of Atlantis. |

On STS-7, the distant views of Challenger in orbit were taken from the Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-01) released and later retrieved using the RMS.On STS-41B, the satellite was carried back into space (as SPAS-01A) but was not released because of a problem. The distant views of Challenger in orbit on STS-41B were taken on EVA-1 with cameras mounted on the MMU backpacks tested by Bruce McCandless and Robert Stewart. |

Did NASA label the STS-7 distant view you refer too as S81 35801? |

I have the NASA number as S83-35801, which shows Challenger above the Earth limb. S83-35802 shows Challenger below the Earth limb.I think 35802 was actually taken before 35801. |

I'm sorry I posted S81-35801. Should have been S83-------. Whose numbering is 32-1701 and 32-1702? |

Those are film magazine and frame numbers. You can often see those numbers on the border of raw, uncropped images.

The STS-76 looks almost like a orbiter pitch maneuver at the ISS. Nice to see the original markings in space like that. Too bad there was no shots of Columbia in orbit. |

The SPACEHAB module can be seen in the payload bay. The shuttle was docked to the Mir space station during the STS-76 EVA. From the STS-76 press kit: All of the shuttle crew members will be in Atlantis' crew cabin for the duration of the spacewalk, and all Mir crew members, including Mir-21 crewmember astronaut Shannon Lucid, will be aboard the Mir. |

All of the shuttle missions to Mir (except STS-84) did a flyaround of the space station after undocking. The STS-76 photo was taken after undocking. |

There is AMOS (Air Force Maui Optical Site) imagery taken from the ground of STS-107 Columbia in orbit. The AMOS tests involved other shuttle missions also. |
