collectSPACE New commercial spacecraft 'parking spot' added to space stationThe International Space Station now has its first parking spot reserved for commercial vehicles. Two NASA astronauts on Friday (Aug. 19) performed a six hour spacewalk outside the orbiting laboratory to install the docking ring, where Boeing and SpaceX crewed capsules will connect to the space station in the near future. Another of the international docking adapters (IDA) is planned to be launched in late 2017. |

As I understand, IDA-2 is a U.S. development using Russian specifications. So, putting aside geopolitics, could Soyuz or Shenzhou dock at the PMA-2 if outfitted with the appropriate interfaces? Similarly, could Dragon and Starliner attach to the various Russian ports? |

The IDA is designed to an international docking system standard that was agreed to by NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency. If Russia, or other countries, design their future spacecraft (or modify their existing spacecraft) to use the standard, then they would be technologically compatible with the IDA. The existing docking ports on the Russian segment of the space station would need an adapter (like the IDA) to be compatible with Dragon and Starliner. | |
