Would there have been any improvements in performance, cost or reliability if the space shuttle used RS-68 engines, if they had existed back in the 1980s?

No. The shuttle could have not made it to orbit using the RS-68. The ISP is too low. There is a saying used on other forums that is applicable here. Rockets are not Legos. Components are not easily interchanged.
