The caption for STS-97 photo KSC-00PD-5059 describes the problem encountered when Endeavour reached Pad B: Space Shuttle Endeavour and the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) start backing through the gate to Launch Pad 39B after a cracked cleat was discovered on the crawler-transporter. Workers near the pad (behind the crawler track) look at the cleats. The vehicle, which moves the MLP and Shuttle at about 1 mph, has a leveling system designed to keep the top of the Space Shuttle vertical while negotiating the 5 percent grade leading to the top of the pad. When the Shuttle-MLP are back on level ground, the crawler tracks will be inspected and the broken cleat repaired. There was no caption for this Discovery rollout photo found on tumblr. Can someone describe what is happening? What was the mission? |

The second photo is STS-114 and they are taking photos from a new perspective. However, the reason was not primarily for pretty pictures. As the caption indicates, they were taking imagery from the same camera angle that would be used during the mission from the end of the orbiter's new OBSS arm to inspect for post-launch damage to the tiles or RCC panels. They did not do it again during rollout, specifically, on subsequent missions. |

Hadn't seen that before. That same rollout (STS-114) was photographed from the ISS by Leroy Chiao on Expedition 10.
