For the "Moving Beyond Earth" exhibit here at the National Air and Space Museum, we're putting together a slide show of the best crew portraits for each shuttle mission. We want lots of variety, so I thought I'd solicit ideas from all of you on what YOUR favorite crew portraits are. They key is the availability from NASA - we want these to reflect the changing nature of the crews in both gender, cultural heritage, age, etc, but we want a single credit line to NASA.Feel free to email me separately, or post something here. Please include the NASA image number so I can ask them for a high res version. Many thanks for the feedback! ------------------ Jennifer Levasseur Museum Specialist Space History Division National Air and Space Museum |

Well, I think you should not just do true crew portraits, the canned NASA shots. But mix in some candid crew shots, like this one of the STS-133 crew. |

Not sure if this has a NASA image number, but here is my favorite crew picture (STS-54). |

Almost every time this question comes up, the most frequently mentioned crew portrait is STS-41, with the sunset and T-38 jet in the background. There was an alternate version also with the crew wearing their flight gear and holding their helmets which is even better.Don't know why it's so appealing....Right Stuff pilots with a sleek supersonic jet? If not for the NASA logo on the tail, there is no reference to space to the average viewer. But WAY cooler than some of the Photoshop specials done later in the program. I recently saw a long list of crew photos for sale someplace, and was surprised, when you line them all up like that, how nearly identical many of them are. There was a long period with a lack of photographic creativity... nothing but orange suits and the crewmember in the front holding a large crew patch plaque. |

Fantastic ideas so far... thanks for the suggestions!!! We are looking to really vary the look of these, so it's not just pumpkin suits one after the other, or all the other boring repetition that could happen.I appreciate the help everyone! |

STS-49 crew in blue jumpsuits in front of Endeavour on Runway 22 at Edwards. In the sunshine with mountains in the background. I don't have the I.D. number, but it's a popular photo. |

STS-36 has a great crew photo, featuring the crew in front of the shuttle on the pad. STS-39 has a beautiful, simple background of the nighttime earth from orbit. |

This is the team's favorite one so far... we are using it for sure to represent that mission! (and joked we should collect that eagle!) |

I tend to like the gag photos: STS-6's F-Troop; STS-132's tuxes; and STS-61E's vintage costumes. Then there's the what could have beens: STS-62A and either STS-61F or 61G. But interestingly enough, one of my favorite photos is for what it doesn't show. STS-61H, which doesn't have either the British or Indonesian PSs. |

My preference is for any crew pic actually taken in space. While they are still posed they are more candid due to time and spatial considerations. My favorite official preflight crew portrait is for STS-36. |

Heh! They should display the alternate 61B photo next to the alternate 111 photo. Also, the 51D next to 33R next to 132... |

I've also liked the crew picture for STS-50 (JSCCL-121). with the crew standing in front of Columbia's nose (which I do not think was photoshopped or any other means), while she was in the Orbiter Processing facility. Not only that, but the crew was diverse, with 2 females (Baker and Dunbar) and a Vietnamese born (Trinh) astronaut. |

I think the STS-50 crew photo was done in Palmdale when Columbia was there for it OMDP after STS-40. One of My favorite crew photos was STS-51F, Spacelab 2. It is the normal 80's blue flightsuits but they have the Spacelab 2 payload in the photo. |

They look like members of the French synth music group "Space". Some of the later mission posters should be included in the collection as in the later years, the pop culture references were beginning to come fast and furious and NASA seemed to open up more about allowing them as opposed to just the official mission portraits. The STS-124 Harry Potter inspired poster is a leading candidate as that thing practically got snapped up completely at the NASA centers when it came out due to the book series popularity. The Trek movie inspired STS-134 poster with Kelly and company doing the JJ Abrams Trek poses would be nice as well (and 133's baseball themed poster). My most treasured memento poster is the ISS Expedition 16 Matrix themed one (but that doesn't count for this as it is ISS instead of shuttle, but it was very well done). By the way, where did the 132 crew get those ugly looking dinner jackets anyway? |

My favorite is the STS-51L crew portrait. It is simple and respectful. It includes a nice mix of race, religion, ethnicity, gender and personal achievement. The darken reddish backdrop, with a beautiful positioning of the American flag alongside the shuttle stack model and crew helmets made the photo wonderful. Plus I love the offset of the crews flight pants, polo shirts and jackets that reflect the earlier years of the shuttle program. Don't get me wrong, I love the gag photos, but there is something about the 51L crew photo that continues to deliver a message... |

You've all outdone yourselves! Thanks so much. I want to use as many of the posters and gag photos as I can. I have the website for the posters, but does anyone know if the gag photos are really official shots with image numbers?Another quick question: I've gone all around the web looking for the image number for the STS-51G image with everyone in uniforms. I'd love to use it, but to order the right resolution for our screens, I need a file name! Thanks again everyone. |

85-HC-178 is a transparency number from NASA Headquarters. The B&W number applies for the color print from JSC as well: S85-32878. |

Thanks to garyd2831 and heng44 for the numbers on the STS-51G photo. It was one we needed to have for sure and I just kept running into dead ends online. If you know photo numbers for the other gag photos, we'd love to use as many as we can...the idea is to keep it visually interesting, so we'll sprinkle these in here and there, as well as the later mission gag posters. |

They had better have had a fan going full blast for that shot or the AC cranked as I don't see any of them hooked up to a portable AC unit to keep them from overheating. GREAT photo though. |

In terms of demonstrating a diverse crew, STS-87 crew has to be close to the top of the list. It's crew included three born-Americans (one African American) and three other crew members who originally hailed from India, Japan and Ukraine. The 41G crew photo has a banner group of space firsts - first 7 member crew (the size of the original astronaut class), first female spacewalker, first two females on a shuttle crew, first Canadian (Garneau), first Australian (Scully Power), first time two payload specialists were flown and all led by a familiar shuttle legend (Crippen). |

STS-9 was the first flight with two payload specialists. Crip did get his first and only KSC landing. Kind of off the topic but how many flight that were cancelled or had crew changes had crew photos done? |

- STS-114
- STS-117
- STS-118
- STS-121
- STS-133
That's not a complete list, but there were lithos done for all but one of these crews. |

Pre-Challenger, crew photos were done for 61E through 61H (although the latter without PSs) as well as for 62A.Crew photos exist for the 41F (the flight that launched as 51D with the addition of two PSs) as well as of the original 51D crew when it was Shaw-O'Connor's flight (five-member crew) and for 51D under Brandenstein-Creighton (with Walker and Jarvis as PSs.) |

Technically, it wasn't the 61H crew but the 61M(T) crew. They performed (if I recall correctly) a simulation of the 61M flight profile in support of STS-26. |
