Monday, October 4, 2004, 6:47 a.m. With a mix of surprises and expectations lingering in the air, former U.S. Navy Commander Brian Binnie didn't hesitate. He boarded SpaceShipOne, persevered and rocketed to a record-breaking altitude of 69.6 miles (112 km). His feat captured the Ansari XPRIZE and helped launch a new era in space exploration. The underdog soared to the edge of space, touched greatness and earned his wings.

On September 15, 2022, Brian Binnie passed away after a lifetime of extraordinary achievement and service. And since 2009, we have been proud to have Commander Binnie as part of the BALL Explorers Club. Working in close collaboration with his family, we are honored to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking flight with the Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster II.
