Random House release
Random House is excited to announce the upcoming publication of "Project Hail Mary," a new science-based thriller from Andy Weir, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of "The Martian" and "Artemis."" Ballantine Executive Editor Julian Pavia acquired world rights for this new novel from David Fugate at LaunchBooks Literary Agency. "Project Hail Mary" will have a global English-language publication date of May 4, 2021, in partnership with Random House UK's Del Rey imprint.
In "Project Hail Mary," a lone astronaut awakens to find himself on a ship deep in space, his crewmates dead and his memories missing. All he knows is that he alone must now complete a desperate, last-chance mission to save the Earth from disaster.
Said Weir, "I'm always proud and excited when I finish a book, but I really cannot wait to get this one in people's hands in May. It's hitting a lot of those notes that people responded to with 'The Martian' — but I also went for it in a big way with the science and the speculative aspects, and it took the story in some crazy and exciting new places."
Film rights to the novel have sold to MGM with Ryan Gosling attached to star and filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller set to direct. Joining them as producers are Pascal Pictures' Amy Pascal, Arcadia's Ken Kao, and Lord Miller's Aditya Sood, who was also a producer on Ridley Scott's blockbuster adaptation of "The Martian."

A lone astronaut must save the Earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian.
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission — and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.
Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian — while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

It's going to be near 500 pages so some real substance here. This is cool. Can't wait.

Andy Weir is ready launch his next space adventure and has a mission patch waiting for you if you choose to join him.
The author of the 2014 bestseller "The Martian," which was adapted into the hit Ridley Scott feature film starring Matt Damon, is now back with another tale of discovery, speculation and survival in "Project Hail Mary," coming from Ballantine Books on May 4.
To promote the upcoming release, Weir will take part in a six "stop" virtual book tour, partnering with book stores and museums across the country to share "Project Hail Mary" with their patrons. The first 400 people to register for each event will receive a signed copy of "Project Hail Mary" and a bonus right out the book.

Thanks Robert!!
Note, if buying tickets for a signed book, each site has a different viewing time, and some sites hold the book for local pickup or charge a little more for mailing it to you so carefully check details when placing orders.
I purchased through Politics & Prose (Washington DC 5/10 6pm, with extra $5 shipping).
I'm stumped on translating the crew names, ИVЮХИНА includes a 'V' which is not Cyrillic. Closest seems to be as ИВЮХИНА which yields "ILYUKHENA" and the Kanji? is not my forte.

Our signed copy of "Hail Mary" showed up today, as well as the patch.
I have to tell you it was a very interesting book to listen to. I listen to books on Amazon Audible rather than read these days. The audible was really interesting because it was done in different voices and it made it more realistic, as far as fiction goes, rather than just reading the word. At least for me, I have eye problems that make it difficult these days to read, so listening to a book is my preferred method.

Today's Washington Post has a review of Project Hail Mary.
I haven't yet read the Post review myself since I don't want to come across any spoilers but in the event you are interested it can be found here.

I finished reading it last night. I thought it was great. Similar to The Martian in that lots of technical problems had to be solved but the stakes were much higher. Great book!

I look forward to reading this novel, and I hope it's a return to form after the somewhat underwhelming "Artemis."

"Project Hail Mary" will open in theaters in the United States on March 20, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios teased the movie during its presentation to theater owners at CinemaCon.
The trailer that Amazon MGM Studios shared shows [Ryan] Gosling and his small team in space, gazing out at a dazzling constellation of stars. All of it unspools to the strains of Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times."
"It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag," Gosling said after he took the stage to share the footage.

OMG! I watched the trailer three times. It looks awesome. It's one of my favorite books. It's a nice look at how we might actually deal with an alien. Gosling looks like a good choice too.

I agree, the trailer was great. A few notes:
I was surprised to see NASA's logo, not because the agency isn't identified in the book (it is) but because I didn't think this was a production NASA would cooperate on (given it is more of a science fiction story than "The Martian").
I have to wonder if that line, "I can't even moonwalk..." is a nod to "First Man."
I was hoping they would keep the Project Hail Mary mission patch the same as described in the book and given out by the publisher in 2021 (as pictured up thread). No such luck.
