The Hulu original series "The First" will premiere on Sept. 14, 2018.
Sean Penn leads an ensemble cast in this near-future drama about a crew of astronauts attempting to become the first humans on Mars. Under the direction of visionary aerospace magnate Laz Ingram (Natascha McElhone), the crew contends with peril and personal sacrifice as they undertake the greatest pioneering feat in human history.

Hulu's big-budget space drama "The First" has been permanently grounded.
The streamer has opted to cancel the Sean Penn-led drama from creator Beau Willimon after one season.
The drama, which marked Penn's first TV series regular role, launched in September to lackluster reviews. The Hollywood Reporter's chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg said in his review that the series — about a Mars expedition — had "its eyes on the heavens but its feet on the ground" as "The First" was more of an exploration of what it takes to get to space than time in orbit.

That's a shame. I enjoyed the show, even if the space part of it was sort of just getting started in the final 20 minutes of the last episode.

Disappointing. I know a lot of criticism about this show was it was mostly pre-launch than in-flight, but the human interest angle intrigued me.

So sad, they had plenty of options for at least a rich second season.

I enjoyed the show a lot, but I don't know what a second season could do, without totally changing the format. The show was, as stated, about the trials of getting to space, not what happens in space. I loved the way it ended. Sean Penn should be very proud of this show.
