Actor Hugh O'Brian is probably known from his many appearances in TV westerns, particularly "The Life & Legend of Wyaat Earp" (1955-1961), which can be seen regularly on cable TV. Hugh O'Brian died Monday (Sept. 5) at the age of 91.
What may not be known is that Hugh O'Brian starred as Harry Chamberlain in the 1950 film "Rocketship X-M" (a.k.a. "Expedition Moon"). This B&W film was one of the first science-fiction films after WW II.
Rocketship X-M tells the story of a Moon expedition that, through a series of unforeseen events, winds up traveling instead to distant Mars. Once on the Red Planet, its crew discovers the remnants of a Martian civilization destroyed long ago by atomic war and now reverted to barbarism.
More information of this film can be found on Wikipedia.

Not a bad movie, considering it was made in 1950. Twenty years later, he was down at the Cape to watch the real thing.

Hugh O’Brian also had a sustained interest in the Apollo program. His Youth Foundation sponsored 67 teenage boys from the US and abroad to attend a special week-long Explorer Space Seminar at KSC in 1970 that included the Apollo 14 launch. It was sponsored by Pepsi-Cola and the Boy Scouts. He also received the 1971 Freedom Through Knowledge Award from the National Space Club. I met him at the Apollo 17 launch.

Hugh O'Brian is quoted in the July 23, 1969 issue of Spaceport News on page 3. Talking about the Apollo 11 launch, he said:
It's one of the most fantastic sights I've ever seen. A great tribute, not just to the technicians and the astronauts, of course, they're fantastic, but all the little guy's efforts that went into putting this whole thing together.
All the people who work here at this complex. The thousands and thousands of man hours that went into this effort. A beautiful, beautiful sight.

Sorry to hear this. He was a great actor. Rocketship X-M is a very good science fiction film. If you haven't seen it yet, please check it out, especially for its rather unconventional ending.
