Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin, 27, who portrayed Enterprise crew member Ensign Pavel Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek films starting in 2009, was killed Sunday after a freak accident involving his car at home. He had gotten out of the vehicle and was pinned and killed when it rolled back onto him.

The only child of figure skating parents, he came to the U.S. as a baby and briefly even considered joining his parents' profession. But he turned to acting instead, appearing in a wide variety of screen roles in indie, big-budget and even animated films. His characters included a young Kyle Reese in the movie "Terminator Salvation," and starring in fellow actor Jodie Foster's film "The Beaver."

My friends and I got his autograph in NYC few years back, polite mannered. I loved him in "Charlie Bartlett," and he and fellow Star Trek actor Chris Pine were together in a prior film, "Fierce People."

I really, really liked this guy. My heart goes out to his father, what a sad Father's Day.
