James Horner, the film composer behind the score for "Apollo 13," died on Monday (June 22) in a plane crash near Santa Barbara. He was 61.

His death was confirmed by his assistant on Facebook:

We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved.
Horner was piloting the small aircraft when it crashed into a remote area about 60 miles north of Santa Barbara, officials said. An earlier report noted that the plane, which was registered to the composer, had gone down, but the pilot had not been identified, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

Horner also composed the scores for "Titanic," "Braveheart," "A Beautiful Mind," "Glory," "Legends of the Fall" and "Avatar."

He is a great talent. His scores to the Star Trek movies, Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock were my favorites of those films.

The magnificent score in the scene where the Saturn carrying Apollo 13 lifts off still sends a shiver of delight down my spine. A wonderfully talented man whose many talents will be sorely missed.

Not to mention his work in "Aliens" and "Glory," two of my all-time favorite movies.

He was just 61 (very young for a composer). He left us way too soon...

His score for "Apollo 13" is a big part of why I like that movie so much. He worked on an incredible number of movies. Here is a good article dissecting his work way back in 1992's "Sneakers."

Surprised James Horner was mentioned on this website, but I was a fan. I got him to sit down and sign 17 soundtrack CDs in front of Apple NYC, no problem, even a little discussion.

He seemed so mild mannered.

Will Jennings wrote the lyrics to "My Heart Will Go On," the Titanic blockbuster which was my favorite Horner co-wrote.
