Astronomy Picture of the Day for April 1, 2015:

How will cows survive on the Moon? One of the most vexing questions asked about space, scientists have spent decades debating this key issue. Finally, after extensive computer modeling and over a dozen midnight milkings, engineers have designed, built, and now tested the new Lunar Grazing Module (LGM), a multi-purpose celestial bovine containment system...

MMMMMMMMMMM. In the UK a dairy cow would usually be polled and thus the need for a helmet to cater for horns would be rendered unnecessary.

That little statuette is actually quite rare. A company called Cow Parade produced it back in 2000. The NASA meatball on it's right side was not authorized for use by the space agency; so they had to be recalled and the logo painted over. It's name is "Mooooonwalk".

The one pictured above though, is the original one-of-a-kind and is the size of a real cow. CowParade began in 1999 as a public art exhibition and has visited 79 cities since, featuring over 5,000 painted cow statues.

To give this a further connection to space history: the fourth city to host "CowParade" was West Orange, New Jersey, hometown to Scott and Mark Kelly (as well as yours truly). ("Moonwalk" appeared on the tour's first stop, Chicago.)

It needs an airlock in the suit to dispense cow pies on the lunar surface.
