If you're in the Delaware area, volunteers are needed for spacesuit glove testing. But you have to be between 5-10 and 6-2:
I'm in need of someone who can test some gloves while pressurized in our space suit - between the hours of 8 - 4, Mon - Friday. They must be between 5'10" and 6' 2" and weight proportional to height and in good condition. Any takers?? It's for about 6 weeks in Frederica, DE. ~$12/Hr. You'll never have a job like this again. email me:
I wrote the guy, though I'm not of the height requirements, and he said further:
As long as you are around during most of the day that's fine - I can work with you on a schedule. I need the 5'10" to 6'2" and the part most people fail on is the waist size. You need to be able. to fit into the lower torso (or pants) and anyone with a small to medium waist size works best - too large and it's not going to work. Anyone with a stocky build is probably out. If you are interested you must go through Kelly Temp Services in the Greentree Shopping ctr in Dover. Ask for Carol. Once you fill out the paperwork they schedule an interview with me so I can get exact measurements. It sounds like a lot but it's relatively easy. We start in a couple of weeks.

The "guy" is Bill Ayrey, quality manager and company historian at ILC Dover.

He's also a collectSPACE member ("SpaceSuitPGA").

I did not expect my request for suit testing to make it to collectSPACE but it's good to hear from so many of you out there.

ILC has some new materials going into the Phase VI glove and we need to do certification testing to verify the gloves are as good or better than the baseline. This is only a 6 week test give or take - at about 36 - 40 hours per week.

I'll likely get someone who lives in the Dover, DE area. They have to be between 5'10" and 6'2" with weight proportional to height but being on the slim size is best - waist size around 32 - 38". Hands should be average size.

I interview and select based on several dimensions I gather. I then send the candidates to a local physician for a class III flight physical to make sure they can safely pressurize in the suit.

When in the suit, the subjects work various tools until a set number of scenarios are completed. Typically, you are in the suit for about 1 hour at a time, maybe 3 - 4 times a day cycling between subjects. It's an awesome job but very short in duration and subject to a lot of down time.

There is no chance at getting a full-time job out of this. Just about everyone who has helped with suit testing over the many years has little interest in the pay as you can imagine.

Thanks for the interest and please keep supporting the manned space program!

Suspect many of us, if we lived in the local area, would step up and do this for no pay.

I offered my services to Bill on the condition he covered my hotel bill and air fare.

Not surprisingly he turned me down... not least because I also failed to meet the height and "width" constraints.

I did score well on enthusiasm however so maybe next time.

I sympathise Rick. In my limited knowledge of your good self you have always been dressed in the 'height of fashion' and whilst not exactly a 'wide boy', to my mind would be well suited to this task.

On edit - dare one say 'if the glove fits, wear it'?

My glove size is proportionate to my height.
