Nike looks to space for NBA Star sneakers

Three icons of professional basketball will don special space-themed sneakers when they take the court for the NBA All-Star Game in Orlando later this month.

LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kobe Bryant will wear special edition Nike shoes styled after NASA spacesuits and inspired by astronauts. Their fans will also be able to purchase the same sneakers as well as others designed by Nike to evoke central Florida's association with space exploration.

They're nifty looking, but I don't see the space connection. What am I missing?

If you click on the link you can see more shoes. The last pair in the link are pretty darn cool. I have a hard time seeing myself in a pair, but they're still cool.

I like how the logos are reminiscent of mission patches.

The headline links to the article (the photo links to the gallery), which describes the relationship between the sneakers and space exploration.

In a nutshell, two of the players shoes' colorways — sneaker-speak for design — were inspired by the spacesuits worn by astronauts from their home states. The third, as well as the sportswear collection, was influenced by telescope imagery of nebulae (what Nike refers to as "supernova").

And as AJ noted, the players' shoes all feature logos designed to evoke mission patches.

Personally, I don't know if I could pull off wearing any of them, but the bright orange, ACES-inspired LeBron 9 is my favorite (with the olive green Nike Dunk a close second).

I like the Lebron 9 as well. It might make for an interesting contrast with a blue Space Camp flight suit.

It wasn't clear if these are a really limited batch, i.e. the pairs will cost a bundle. I like the gray dunk ones.

I have asked Nike, Inc. to clarify the limited nature of these sneakers. If and when I hear back, I'll share what they say.

At latest though, NikeStore.com will have all the details beginning Feb. 23 for the sportswear collection and Feb. 25 for the basketball collection.

The demand for the new Nike Air Foamposite One Galaxy was so great that a riot broke out in Orlando last night as thousands lined up to buy the new shoes.
Witnesses said there were about 1,200 people waiting outside Foot Locker for the release of the Nike Air Foamposite One Galaxy, a galactic-themed sneaker designed in part as a nod to Florida's space industry.

The shoes feature a colorful, starry design resembling a nebula in deep space. They even glow in the dark.

Officials said Foot Locker only had about 200 pairs of the new sneakers, and were prepared to start selling them at 11 p.m. Thursday.

But police said a crowd quickly formed outside the store more hours earlier. So officers asked everyone to wait across the street.

Then, around 9:45 p.m., police said one person made a run toward the store, and the rest of the crowd quickly followed, resulting in what some called "absolute chaos."

As a result, the sale at that Florida mall was canceled. Meanwhile, retailers in other cities, including New York, reported long lines over night without incident.

The sneakers retail for $220, but their resale value is reportedly around $2,000.

All times are CT (US)
