I've done my fair share of interviews in the course of collectSPACE's 12 years but talking with Elmo definitely stands alone as one of the memorable encounters I have ever had. If I wasn't already feeling nostalgic for my childhood by the launch of the final space shuttle, this interview brought me right back to being a kid...
Sesame Street's Elmo tours NASA, sees the final space shuttle launch

Sesame Street's furry red (ticklish) monster, Elmo toured NASA's Kennedy Space Center to learn about space exploration and see the final launch of the space shuttle. Just before shuttle Atlantis lifted off, Elmo took a few moments to talk with collectSPACE about meeting astronauts, flying to the moon, and exploring NASA.

Brought to you by the numbers 3, 2, 1...

I read the transcript and I heard Elmo's voice in my head when I read his parts...

Thank goodness! For a minute, I thought the voice was inside my head. Glad it's in someone else's!

Robert, am I being out of line by asking for an interview with Cookie Monster or Grover next?

Not at all. As soon as they visit NASA, I'll be first in line to interview them, too.

Robert needs to interview Kermit the Frog - or rather, have newscaster Kermit interview him.

By the way, did you forget in addition to Slimey, three pigs went into space?

Different show, and now different owners. Elmo wouldn't know anything about Link Hogthrob.

Why do they always talk in third person? Never got that...

Elmo is three-and-a-half years old. Pronouns confuse him. From Sesame Workshop:
Elmo mimics the behavior of many preschoolers. Like 3-year-olds, he doesn't always have the skills or knowledge to speak proper English.

Except that Kermit appeared on both shows, so I would say that both The Muppet Show and Sesame Street take place in the same universe (although Kermit appears to now be exclusive to the Muppet Show universe....)

But I'll take Elmo's age as the reason for him not knowing about Link.

Enjoyed your interview with Elmo as well as the Space.com interview. Did everyone get the press op. I really want to ask if Jay Barbree stormed out of the interview because Elmo wasn't answering the tough question!

Slimey to the Moon!

This part isn't for the kids:

Did you have any problem talking to Elmo when you are seeing the reality, the person working the hand puppet? I had some real problems with the Phillie Phanatic (created by Henson as well) in that he sees and talks through his neck. So anytime I talked to him (and he's not supposed to talk) I would look at his neck rather than his face. Some of the photos my wife took prove this.

There were only five media spots for the interviews, in addition to "specials" like Elmo appearing on Spaceflight Now's launch webcast.

To be absolutely honest, as soon as the interview started, I was talking to Elmo. As far I as I was consciously aware, there was no one else in the room.

In fact, it was only when I went to hand Elmo the patches, that I saw Kevin Clash, as he reached up with his other hand to take them. But as soon as I handed off the patches, I snapped back to seeing only Elmo.
