A group of MIT students have apparently demonstrated the cheapest rig yet to successfully reach and image the upper stratosphere. |

Not bad. But did the thing deflect any giant meteors threatening Earth or end up on the Planet of the Apes? That is what I call low budget though, very nice work! |

Apparently, this sort of thing is not unheard of, although it is news to me. There are a number of websites devoted to "ham ballooning" and it sounds like a great hobby. Just bear in mind you have to let the FAA know what you are up to. I'd love to hear if anyone else tries it. I'm seriously interested, but too busy with life at the moment, alas. |

Has anyone else seen this photo from the edge of space taken by an amateur's backyard balloon? ...and a video from MIT students doing the same thing called Project Icarus.These guys are awesome. Editor's note: Threads merged.

Apparently NASA have contacted the British amateur who took several amazing photos. It actually got primetime news coverage and quite rightly so. They wouldn't say where he was authorised to launch from. |
