MIT International Reivew has released an article in this months issue detailing application of scientific process coupled with space shuttle and satellite derived geospatial data to narrow down the location of Bin Laden just after his escape from Tora Bora and potentially his current location. The geographers who conducted the analysis report that simple facts, publicly available satellite imagery and fundamental principles of geography place the mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks against the U.S. in one of three buildings in the northwest Pakistan town of Parachinar, in the Kurram tribal region near the border with Afghanistan. It makes for an interesting read. One of the most important political questions of our time is: Where is Osama bin Laden? We use biogeographic theories associated with the distribution of life and extinction (distance-decay theory, island biogeography theory, and life history characteristics) and remote sensing data (Landsat ETM+, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, Defense Meteorological Satellite, QuickBird) over three spatial scales (global, regional, local) to identify where bin Laden is most probably currently located. We believe that our work involves the first scientific approach to establishing his current location. The methods are repeatable and can be updated with new information obtained from the US intelligence community. |

Looks like the work will be continuing...Associated Press: US House passes bill to fund spy agencies The House on Friday overwhelmingly passed a bill to fund U.S. spy agencies, using the legislation as an opportunity to commend the operatives who were critical in hunting down al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. The vote was 392-15, a reflection of the strong bipartisan support and the goodwill toward the intelligence community after bin Laden's death... [L]awmakers added a provision to the bill praising the intelligence community for the successful operation in bringing bin Laden to justice. The provision was based on the Senate resolution that passed 97-0... The vote for the provision was 406-0 with four Democrats voting present. The bill authorizes money for 16 intelligence agencies, according to the article. | |
