Miles O'Brien is leaving CNN. CNN is integrating their science coverage into their general news division rather than continue to have it standalone as a separate unit, which led to Miles' and six producers' departure. Miles made a name for himself covering space for the network. In 2002, he secured a deal with NASA to fly as the first journalist on the space shuttle (his plans were subsequently canceled as a result of the loss of orbiter Columbia in February '03). I've known Miles since he took over the space beat from the late John Holliman. Just last month, he (and his son) assisted with the research behind a space artifact. Hopefully, Miles' personal interest in space exploration will be put to good use in his next position. |

In my opinion, CNN has "mistreated" Miles O'Brien for years. This latest news is just another example of their slide from excellence - a "dumbing-down" to the lowest denominator.I wish him the best. |

I'm very, very sad to read that. I've long thought Miles O'Brien had the greatest job in modern journalism, and it saddens me to know we're that much farther removed from the days when networks had a dedicated science reporter or science editor. (This could lead me on a long rant about what modern journalism is coming to, but I'd rather not. Too much like my day job.)I've never met Miles, but a friend whose job brings him in frequent contact with him has always spoken highly of him. Best of luck to Miles, and I hope we see him again really soon. I'll always regret we never got to see him reporting live from orbit. |

What a loss for all of America. His obvious interest and exhuberance in what he reported will sorely be missed. Here's a chance for NASA TV to snag a sincere personality. |

Miles has done an awesome job for CNN... I hope that he turns up on one of the other networks with his articulate and enthusiastic reporting. |

I'm not entirely sure they can. Even if money is not an issue, I believe NASA TV has what amounts to a "No-compete" agreement due to their status as a government agency. Perhaps someone more informed than I can comment more specifically on whether or not this could happen. All of that being said, I think O'Brien would be a boon to NASA TV. (Not to mention the Star Trek nerd in me who would love someone with the name "Miles O'Brien" having anything to do with the space program ) |

I was already pretty disgusted with CNN hiring DL Hughley (a comedian) as a commentator and giving him so much attention. Now this...I've now been weaned off my CNN addiction. |

After their lop-sided coverage of our recent Presidential election, I don't think you can describe CNN as anything but comic.Move over real journalism... at CNN they make the "journalist" the story. |

Maybe he'll follow Glenn Beck to Fox News! They could use a good launch reporter. |

I am extremely to see Miles leave CNN and how they plan to cover the Space Program. Here in Baltimore a news caster called the shuttle a space "capsule". I thought that nobody could replace John Holliman after his untimely death. Miles' enthusiasm and knowledge has been great! I too hope he shows up somewhere that will take advantage of his knowledge of the Space Program!! I wish him all the very best!! |

I met Miles when I was down in Florida for STS-121. A mutual collegue of ours introduced me and Miles is indeed a class act and much smarter then CNN would have you believe. I do think his time unemployed will be short as he is indeed a great asset to any agency that will hire him.Truthfully, I am glad he has left CNN since that company is not what it once was. Headline News is a joke now and I am not impressed with the rest of it. Getting rid of their dedicated science coverage group is a really bad idea when most reporters out there don't have an honest clue of what they are covering (not just the space program either). I should know as I had my own fill of them during STS-121 coverage. |

WNET release via Spaceref.com: Miles O'Brien Returns to Broadcast Journalism Anchoring Blueprint America Documentary on Public Television Acclaimed reporter and anchor Miles O'Brien will return to broadcasting this spring as the anchor and correspondent of a BLUEPRINT AMERICA documentary on public television, tentatively titled: "Blueprint America: A Tale of Three Cities." The documentary, presented by WNET.ORG, will take viewers in and around three very different cities -- Portland, Denver, and New York -- to look past the headlines about crumbling roads and bridges and explore what kind of infrastructure Americans need to meet the pressing challenges of the 21st Century. O'Brien will set out to learn what must be done to keep the nation competitive in the global economy, while at the same time addressing the realities of climate change, diminishing natural resources and population growth. |

For those who didn't see it, Miles made an excellent documentary with PBS Frontline called "Flying Cheap" regarding the safety of the regional airline industry. It was quite eye-opening...especially to see the lifestyle of many first officers with these airlines (and see the inside of one of their "crash pads").If you have any interest in commercial aviation, I highly recommend the program. If you don't catch one of the re-airings, you can watch the full episode (with extras) at the link above. |

Without getting too off-topic, Miles did a fantastic job with this documentary. His reporting of the regional airline industry's problems gave a much more complete picture of what caused the Buffalo accident than the "story" the NTSB put out.A must see for any regular air traveller. |

I just watched "Flying Cheap".Regional Airlines are really a big red flag. They don't see me as a customer when it says operated by. Regional Airlines don't have the same high standards like major airlines. The 49 victims paid for Continental airlines tickets and not for Colgan Air. |

Don't forget the poor guy in the house that the plane fell on. Luckily his wife and daughter were in the next room and escaped. |

Well done documentary, saw it last night. I know very well how the commuter pilots are treated. I have a bunch of friends that have been down that path and suffered until they got with the major airlines. But still suffer even there. I'm glad I picked a different path when I was flying full time as a flight instructor. I just fly and teach for fun now! |
