Another pioneer is gone: Legendary Swiss diver Jacques Piccard has died at the age of 86 at his home on Lake Geneva. An engineer known for designing submarines to study ocean currents and one of two people to reach the deepest point in any ocean, Piccard died on Saturday. In 1960 along with United States Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, Piccard descended 10,916 metres aboard the Trieste into the Challenger Deep off the South Pacific island of Guam. The feat has never been replicated. His father Auguste Piccard was the famous balloonist who did the first Stratosphere flights and Bertrand Piccard, his son, was the first to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon and is attempting to travel around the world in a solar aircraft. |

Per Wikipedia: "Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry named Picard for one or both of the twin brothers Auguste Piccard and Jean Felix Piccard, 20th century Swiss scientists." |

My brother interviewed him about his life for a newspaper in Switzerland, and he reported that he was a very nice and kind man, a true gentleman. . Jurg |

Sad news---- I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Piccard twice in the early '70's, when he visited the Cape and addressed the Canaveral Chapter of the Marine Technology Society. -A very brilliant man.Overshadowed by Apollo 11, his PX-15 "Ben Franklin" submersible spent six weeks riding the Gulf Stream during the summer of 1969. |

I had the honor of talking to this great explorer once- and he was very interested in space exploration as well as the deeper relms. . J.M. Busby |
