I find it amazing that my e-mail box was very busy and my phone kept ringing today to ask me if I heard anything about the Schirra family and the fires.

I received an e-mail from Suzy Schirra at 6pm eastern today. She has been staying with Jo Schirra since Wally's passing in May. Jo is not all the healthy and Suzy has been helping out. They received a reverse 911 call at 8am PDT this morning regarding a mandatory evacuation. They grabbed some photo albums and other things and headed north. They are ok and are staying with family friends in the Newport Beach area.

I/they have no idea about the condition of their home and its contents. But, at least, the two of them [and their dog] are safe. Suzy promised to stay in touch and let me know what's going on.

I'm also staying in touch with Mark Larson who runs SanDiego1700 Radio and is good friends of the Schirra's.

That's the news. Let's keep all of the people who are involved in the CA fires in our thoughts and prayers.

Tracy, my thoughts and prayers are certainly with Jo and Suzy at this time. Not only have they had to contend with the recent loss of Wally, but to be ordered out of your home in the path of these devastating fires must be quite awful. Having visited them a few months back, I know that their home is a virtual museum of papers and other artifacts, and I realise just how much history would be lost if their lovely home fell victim to the fires. I do hope the news turns out good for them, and that they and other residents can soon return to their homes. It must be a heartbreaking time for them.

There's a reporter on TV right now very close to their street. The fire has reached part of their street, but is a slow crawl right now as the wind has died, thankfully, for now. As of now, no houses lost in that area, fingers crossed that the fire passes through there before the winds pick up again...

Personally, I have everyone in the fire zones in my thoughts and prayers. I have relatives near the fire zone north of the LA area.

Steve Hankow called to say that he's ok, if anyone cares. I reminded him that he's not in a fire zone and no one really cares, anyway.

Tracy,

I fully agree. My wife, two kids and I are waiting for our call to evacuate our home near Poway.

My kids were so excited to have school cancelled. Instead of a "Snow Day" San Diego has "Fire Days" Who would have thought?

Which reminds me when I complain about New England winters, that you can shovel the weather here.

I have also learned that Jo Schirra lost her sister recently, so this had been a real whammy of a year for them.

Unfortunately, the Schirra house is full of irreplaceable space history and it would be a shame if it was lost. However, putting it all in perspective, it's more important that lives are saved.

At the same time, I am so glad that Suzy has been staying with Jo. I don't know how she would have done without her being there.

My little girl Christina and I have been saying prayers for everyone affected by the fires. She does a real good Hail Mary and Our Father. We got your back up here in OC.

I've got a satellite receiving setup running in my basement. Satellite receiver on 137mhz, Antenna on roof, computer running Ubuntu 7.04, and Wxtoimg software. It uploads the images to the web after each satellite pass.
Anyway, you can see the smoke from the fires in my home-made satellite images. You may have to wait for a daylight pass, but the page shows the time that the next pass will happen.

from the Schirra Family

Greetings,
All is well with my mother and I. We got the mandatory evacuation on Monday morning and drove up to the xxxxxxx's in Newport beach with the hounds, all the photo albums and a few other treasures. Our house according to various web sites is fine though three houses burnt to the ground across the street. We received word from a neighbor today that tentatively we will be able to go home tomorrow. The fire is still burning the air quality is bad and there are still downed trees and power lines that have to be removed to get all the power back on. It will be a real mess but we are just happy to still have our home. Thank you for your concern and please pass the word on that we are fine.
Warm Regards, Sooz
