A spinoff of RangeZero's "Suggestions For Baby Name", I am asking you for your help in picking out a dog name related to NASA. This will be my second dog. My first is named Houston. This dog is going to be a girl, so that eliminates a lot of good ones. Apollo, Hubble, etc. It is going to be more dificult than RangeZero's because I don't really want a persons name. My parents are letting me decide the name, and I want to do a good job.

I was thinking Gemini or Hadley.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

A Mexican friend of mine had two female dogs with space names that worked well in Spanish and English - Laika and Luna.

If the dog has a fiesty character you could go with Bellatrix (the name of a prominent blue-white star in the Orion constellation)..in latin it means Female Warrior...

I would suggest Orion. That way it would be named for the upcoming Lunar Missions, a stellar constellation, and a telescope making company.

What about "Problem"? Then you could introduce the two dogs to each other by saying: "Houston, we have a Problem"!

How's 'bout harkening back to the old Jetsons cartoon and call it "Astro"? Then you'll have Houston and Astro, and everyone will think baseball...hmmm.

I've seen a few female dogs named Andromeda. Laika would be the obvious choice, though. Other names that come to mind: Comet (though that might be too "Full House"-ish) and Agena.

On a very serious note, think about Judy, Christa, Laurel, or Kalpana, may they rest-in-peace...

Gagarin attended the launch of the dog that immediately preceded him into orbit and named her Zvezdochka, which means Little Star. How about “Star.”

I also vote for Laika. A historic name associated with a dog, plus not a common name for dogs in the west. And it sounds good to the ears, too!

I really like APOLLO. Teach them both to roll over. You could then say...

Houston, Apollo Over...

Thanks to everyone who has come up with their suggestions. I appreciate any you can come up with.

A few comments:

As of now, Agena, Laika, and Gemini are my favorites. My parents don't really like Agena very much becasue it is close to my Grandma's name, Jean. She said she doesn't mind. My parents also said that nobody other than myself would know what that was. I don't really want anything to obvious. Laika is good just because it is the most obvious choice.

cddfspace : Apollo sounds like a boys name, but I like the idea. We can do the same thing wiht Gemini, and that sounds more like a girls name.

micropoox : Houston & Astro are too closely related with baseball, and I am a Met's fan.

Robert : Comet isn't too "Full House"-ish. It is too reindeer-ish.

Scott, tegwilym, and Tahir : Bellatrix, Meridiani, and Tranquility are nice names, but they have too many syllables for a dogs name, and nobody at all would know what they meant.

polheiney : Kennedy is nice, but people don't usually associate him with space, even though he had a very major role in what NASA is today, and would have had a greater impact if he were still around.

Chris : Star is also too obvious, and some people might think Starr Jones.

Lunarrv15 : Snoopy is also a boys name, and not related to space, other than the medallions which nobody would know.

Mike : Orion seems like a boys name too.

Colin : My neighbors have a dog named Trouble. Problem is too close to that, and I don't like them anyway. ( The neighbors, not the dog.)

I appreciate ny other names. I will let you know when I have decided. Thanks again.

I suggested Kennedy because it was a place name like "Houston." Laika is a very pretty sounding name. Have you chosen a dog yet? Sometimes you have to see it first.

Sorry, I misunderstood you.

I have not chosen a dog yet. They were born just last week. The owner of the local pet store told us that his friend has them. He is going to call us, but we wouldn't be able to take it for about 2 months.

I was really only joking with the name Problem, but have you considered either Belka or Strelka? They were two Soviet space dogs (their names mean Squirrel and Arrow respectively). One of Belka's puppies was actually given to President Kennedy's daughter Caroline. It's a good name for a dog, as it's always best to give them short, crisp names.

But also, as this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of Laika's history-making flight, then I think you should give this name most consideration.

Cheers, Colin

Mike,
It's good to have a few different names to select from, but since you haven't seen or picked out the puppy yet, why don't you wait and decide when you go to pick her up?
When you see her and hold her for the first time, her name will come to you in a flash, and it might be one you haven't even thought of!

Well, we found a family that has a litter of 12 boxer puppies. We went to see them today.

I was really pushing for Laika, but my dad wound up winning. I like the name too though.

Pol, "Kennedy" would have gone nice with "Houston", but I really don't think it sounds much like a dogs name. The final verdict is pretty close though. The winner is Tahir's "COCOA".

Houston Texas, and Cocoa Beach Florida go pretty much hand in hand.

Thanks for the suggestion Tahir, and everyone else. We will be taking her home in a either one or two weeks. I will post a few pictures.

Thanks again for all of your help everyone!

We are going to be

I'm a bit late to this thread.

As a long time dog breeder and exhibitor, I'm hoping that you're getting this dog from a reputable boxer breeder who has done all of the necessary health checks and genetic testing. They are lovely dogs with incredible muscle who need lots of execise and attention.

Back on topic

Years ago, I had a dog whose registered name was Ch. Pillow Talk's Shoot The Moon - we called him "Rocket".
