Hey, thanks for all your kind wishes while I was hors du combat.I have to tell you that the hospital isn't my favorite place. Talk about regimentation! Plus I was roped down with enough tubes that I looked like Gulliver in Lilliput. I wasn't able to stage an escape. It wasn't so bad, except for being at the mercy of the nurses. They took special delight in visiting the tortures of the damned on me and then snickering - nastily - every time I said "ouch". The fiends. The doctors were mostly OK, but one flipped his wig when he found out I was going to ride my motorcycle home. The man wouldn't listen to reason! I tried every which way to explain I was in no condition to walk, but he called me a part of the anatomy that's usually the province of proctology. And I only rode it around to the place I was visiting. Someone rode it back to the 'Cuse for me. In any case, thanks a million times for each of your messages. You people are great, and I'm extremely fond of you all. In a manly, decent way of course. PS: I hope the DP's birthday went well, too! |

At the pre-dinner reception before the AHOF Gala Dinner this past Friday evening, I heard the word "Duke" mentioned in a nearby conversation. Honing in, the participants were talking about our "Duke" (d.o.u.) and not Charlie Duke.Glad to have you back. Garry |

I had a couple of scary moments. The worst was when I woke up and saw two of my ex-wives standing over the bed. The looked at me, looked at each other, and burst out laughing. Oh, yeah, they got it on pretty good with the nurses, too. You have no idea how many times one of them said, "We've heard all about you!"Women...deadlier than the male. |

Sorry not to have posted earlier, Duke, but had my laptop implode. Really. Motherboard was replaced, as it's still under the Dell warranty but it let out a little whiff of smoke this morning, so who knows what'll happen next.News of your recovery was greeted with gladness throughout Denver, just so you know. And, OT, that brussels sprouts recipe. You need to salt and pepper them to a farethewell, and then add the olive oil to soak for a good long while. You can see their texture change slightly. Only then are they ready for the oven. I wonder if it would help to blanch them ever so slightly beforehand. Your thoughts, please. |

My thoughts? Yum Diddy!! I'm trying it your way. And wait till I post a recipie for tuna and black olives over angel hair spaghetti. Thanks for your kind words and concern. I feel fortunate to "know" people like everyone at CollectSpace. How was the DP's birthday party? |

The DP's birthday was quiet, according to DP's wife, who made him his favorite meal, cheeseburgers, on May 1st. The night after the gala, Saturday, most of the astronauts gathered at a Cocoa Beach restaurant (Bernardo's?), just family, for dinner. Those gathered sang happy birthday to the DP and another May birthday celebrator (I forget who). Cake. Candles. It was nice. |

And I hope a certain Mercury Astronaut didn't try to lord it over others because of his Healing Powers. |

Well, um, he did make an announcement to that effect--about the healing of the Duke. Astronaut thaumaturgy (sp?) and all. But it was noisy and the martinis were excellent. The thing is, you're better, right? |

Tuna fish and black olives over pasta? That explains the multitude of ex-wives AND the hospital stay! Glad you are better, it was mighty quiet around here! Tom |

I'm afraid my utility in identifying latter-day astronauts is quite limited. Most of astronauts I knew in the 1960s were neighborhood dads, whom I called Mr. so and so, then in their 30s and 40s. So much has changed, including the Mrs. so and sos. Unrecognizable at least to me. I was saddened to realize that my last AHOF gala (a much smaller affair) was attended by all surviving six Mercury guys, including Deke, who succumbed it seemed quite rapidly to a brain tumor just a year afterward. |

Well, I settled on that language after pondering (and rejecting) the alternative: they resembled nothing so much as a convivial group of old Masons. . . . |
