Well, this is François in Montréal. The last space gathering I attended is New Jersey too.

I have been reading contemporay books about space history for about ten years now, and collecting for about five.

My main collecting interests are

  • documentary artifacts such as manuals, books, notebooks, maps;
  • hardware such as panel instruments and switches;
  • presentation items like plaques, tie tacks, certificates, gifts;
  • and autographs, mostly collected in person.

My principal eras of interest are pre-shuttle space and the Russian programs.

The aspects that passion me the most are

  • guidance and navigation,
  • scientific experiments,
  • flight control,
  • space agencies,
  • flight computing,
  • and the human experience of flight and support.

I was born in 1959, I am a musician (violon and violoncello), I specialize in musical animation for corporate and social events.

I live with Martine (a violonist too)

Hello All !

I'm very new to the forum myself. I'm in Toronto, and a 41 year old married father of 2.
I work in the medical field, slecifically Ophthalmic. (Eyes and and stuff.....)
Was originally born in West Germany, and came to Canada at the age of 3 when my father , who worked for Carl Zeiss in Germany was transferred to Toronto. Zeiss had some sort of connection to Hasselblad, in terms of the lenses and optics for the cameras. As everyone knows Hasselblads were taken to the moon !! Through Zeiss, we were all sort of involved in the early Space flights, not directly, but very loose. I remember all the Toronto employees gathering in July 1969 to watch the Apollo 11 flight together, and being given a lot of neat books, and photos, and things afterwards. This is where it started for me, and never really left me. While other interests are Formula 1 racing , music, (I can't play anything, but love to listen to Jazz, Classical, and Rock...no rap....that isn't music...) , and love to read and collect books.
My space collection, is small, but mainly centers around books. I was given a copy of "We Seven" , when it was published, and still have it today. I am trying to round up all the books written by and about the astronauts, and am almost there, but still missing a few.
So I'd have to say books are mainly my thing. I do have a small number of signed things though, such as signed John Glenn photo, a signed Alan Shepard book, 2 signed Gordon Cooper cards.

I stumbled on this site a few months ago, and decided to lurk about and see what it was like. Now I'm in !!
I'd like to plan a trip to KSC and have a look, and would also like to go the the Smithsonian and see the exhibits there. I'm afraid that all we have in Toronto is a display of the Canadarm from a shuttle. I hope to keep getting the books I need for my collection, and really just enjoy reading about Nasa, and it's people and history. My wife surprised me at Christmas with the DVD set ot "From The Earth To The Moon", as well as a few misison patches and pins. (I usually get socks and underwear, so for me this was a huge deal....) She also got me "The Right Stuff", and "Apollo 13" DVD's, so think I'll keep her.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here, and hope to meet some people with like interests, even if it is only online...

By the way.....If anyone has any Eye-related questions....I am happy to help. I am in the eye surgery field as a surgical consultant and Ophthalmic assistant / Education director. Also, I hope I don't annoy anyone by asking opinions now and then, as I am new to collecting, even though I have always loved Space. I'm not one of those "the moon landing was faked" conspiracy theorists, and have no time for them either, but I gather that this will be the best place to expand my own knowledge. I just finished reading "First Man", by Hansen, (last night at 1 am.........) , and am about to pick up "Riding Rockets" by Mike Mullane....so here we go again......
Cheers from Toronto !!!

Peter

EH! Paul, good idea!
Peter, welcome to cS. You will find a great bunch of guys and gals here, very knowledgeable too!

I'm Pierre-Yves, a 51 year old French Canadian from Montreal. I've been collecting since 1968 but more intensively for the last 6-7 years.
I mainly collect models and figurines but also, books and trading cards (autographed or not). I went to the last 2 UACC shows in Burbank and New-Jersey. At the last show, I was sitting with Sy Liebergot (also a cS member) and Ed Buckbee.

I'm a documentation technician for an electronic company. Voila!!

John, I stopped e-mailing Francois a long time ago!!!

I'm Ken Glover from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Here's my bio: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/glover.html

I contribute to the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal (www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj) and the Alan Bean on-line Gallery (www.alanbeangallery.com). I have a small-but-growing collection of spaceflight memorabilia.

Although I visit CollectSpace often and read through the messages, it was this thread calling on Canadians that finally prompted me out of my shell to make a post.

Thanks to Robert Pearlman for providing this excellent website. Thanks also to all the knowledgeable folks who post to this site and help me learn the ins and outs of collecting space stuff.

Welcome Ken. Can any one hold the Apollo 17 Goodwill Rock or was that because of a special reason. And what brought you the set of Magnificent Desolation. Were you part of the project?

After many inquiries, I finally located the Canadian piece of the Goodwill Rock back in '00. It was not on public display but held in the storage and conservation facility of the Canadian Museum of Nature, along with the Samsonite suitcase it travelled in. I was very fortunate to be able to hold it -- I'm pretty sure that they don't let just anyone do that.

I worked as a research consultant on Magnificent Desolation and was able to visit the set while they were filming.

My turn, I guess. My name is Brian Buchan. I'm 43, and live in Kamloops BC, where I own a small manufacturing firm (www.controlgrips.com). We recently sold some product to NASA, which was quite exciting!

I have a modest and varied collection, including some flown artifacts, a few autographs, and several very large stacks of covers that I swear I will get sorted and mounted someday. I've had a life-long interest in things aviation and space related, but I only really started collecting about 4 years ago. Not too much else to tell.

Hey Paul, great subject.

I am 48 years old and live in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada (turn right at Maine). I am a program analyst for the Canadian Federal Government. I have two kids, an 18-year old girl (first year university) and a 15-year old son who, very fortunately for me, also has a keen interest in the space program.

Although I have always had an interest in this subject, I only started collecting in 2003 (and have been kicking myself ever since for not starting much, much earlier). As I look back I think I can point to the following events as the reason I have gotten into it so deeply:

1995: The movie “Apollo 13” is released.
1998: John Glenn’s shuttle flight
2000: My then 10-year old son writes to John Glenn and receives an autographed photo of and some educational material in the mail.
2001: My family and I are lucky enough to witness the launch of STS-102 Discovery while on vacation in Florida. The vacation was booked for March break long in advance and STS-102 was delayed a couple of times. REAL lucky.
2002: Finding this site… this really sealed it as there are so many knowledgeable people sharing information. The discussions are often lively and almost always interesting. So I thank Rob and all of you for that. I don’t think there is a space program-related question that you cannot get the answer to on here.

My son and I attended the Burbank and NJ shows, and got to meet many cS members. Paul, it’s too bad that we didn’t connect prior to NJ. We were with Pierre-Yves and Francois quite a bit and had a blast. At Burbank, we hung with David (Poolman) who has been a mentor and thankfully answered a gazillion questions for me when I first started.

We dined with Alan Bean in Burbank (with another Canadian cS member, Richard Tetreault of London, Ontario) and Jack Lousma in NJ, both terrific gentlemen. Richard if you read this, email me as my messages to you are bouncing back.

My son and I also visited NASM in Washington last summer.

I collect autographed photos and books mostly. And I focus mainly on the pre-shuttle days. What history!

Hey Brian, it’s good to see that someone west of Ontario is on this board. As far as I know I am the only Atlantic Canadian.

Well now It's my turn

I have been interested in the space program wayyyyyyyyyyy back to 1969. The big landing, man walked on the moon. I was 7 and my mom let me stay home from school. In fact she let me stay home for every Apollo launch that occurred after that. It was funny what a seven year old knows. When those fuzzy pictures came back with Neil and Buzz I thought that there were alien creatures on the moon. But that changed of course.
My parent took me to KSC and it was awesome.

Ever since then I've been hooked.

The next big event for me was when Challenger exploded. I was in college. It was THE topic. Well in metallurgy classes we discussed the reasons of what happened. We discussed welding problem to stress fractures. No one guessed the O rings.

Next for me would be a visit to watch STS-75. What an experince. I suggest everyone goes.

A while back there was a program on the CBC call the Avro Arrow. What I found amazing after the collapse of the company was the amount of Canadians who found work with NASA and all their contributors to the space program. All of our fellow Canadians who had direct/ hands on/ development of/ etc, to bring the program the sucess it had. I wish I knew how many there were and their role. Their experiences.

Last year I found Ebay, to my wife's shagrin, and just went and did it. My first purchase was a signed Neil Armstrong. I was the only bidder. Took big snowball's to do it but I had a feeling. And it turned out right. Cal10pilot, Bruce Forrest, had been a collector for over 35 plus years. In fact he was a pilot in the Houston area during the beginning of the program and flew many of the astros. In those days the cockpit was a place to visit and the Astros did. So I owe a big thank you to him for helping me through the transition period of Newbie learning. We are always learning but remember the newbie learning curve????????

Hey I say Newbie not Newfie. But that would be another thread LOL

So with my wife being a travel agent it wasn't too hard to convince her to travel to New Jersey for the convention.

It's too bad we all couldn't have got together and had a Canadian invasion. Did meet a few though. Two couples from TO. We had a blast.

Before the dinner, at the signing, I was talking with Dave Scott and his wife about seeing them at dinner. They asked who we were going to sit with and I mentioned Brian Binney. Funny thing Dave Scott said that to him Brian is not what you would think of as a test pilot. I said why's that? Dave replied because he is so quiet and reserved. I asked what do you mean. He replied well last night when we were all together (astronaunt and wives)he would barely talk, test pilots are very bold and he wasn't. I said to Dave, maybe he was in awe just being in the same room with all his childhood heros. And Dave's reaction was. I didn't think of that. So a Canadian helped contribute to the program once more.

Once that the signing was over, the addage of being in the right place at the right time, occured. It was about 11 or 12 at night and we were in the bar. One of the oganizers came down to get about 20 forks and knives and I started talking with her. She is related to one of the organizers and after I showed her a picture my wife took of Buzz after I asked him if he was Neil Armstrong, got us invited back to the Astro room. I got to party with Dick Gordon and one of the Russians. Sorry no pics. Just didn't want to change from a buddy to a tourist. Didn't think was right. Sorry can't remember who the Russian was because boy can they drink! Even though they were 70 years old - I couldn't keep up!

So now I found Cs and am building a network of fellow space nuts.

It's an amazing read, chronicling how the Canadian engineers moved over into the space program. I'm not Canadian, and found it one of the most readable space history books I'd read in a long time. So Canadians should definitely read it!!

I have just registered on this site today (although I have been reading the site for 5+ years). I guess I still qualify for this thread. I was born Canadian but three years ago I became a Naturalized US citizen. I lived in Barrie Ontario for the first 12 years of my life then moved to London Ontario and graduated from Sir Wilfrid Laurier SS. I went off to Ryerson in Toronto where I graduated in Aerospace Engineering in 1979, then onto work for Canadair in Montreal for four years then down to Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah GA where I have been for the last 22 years. (it’s great here, you don’t have to shovel rain)

My passion for the space program started with the flight of Alan Shepard and grew into the Aerospace career I now have. I collect all that is Space related with a leaning toward models . In my aviation career the only support I make directly to the space program is with the Gulfstream GII Space Shuttle trainer aircraft. The Gulfstream Service Center here in Savannah supports it for heavy maintenance and my team does the Engineering that supports them. I do remember being part of a critical system for a space shuttle launch once, in that, one of the trainers was in for repairs (they fly those aircraft different than most business aircraft) and had to be out on time to support a launch. If it was not, the launch would have been postponed. We did get it out on time but it was around the clock effort. I just wish I would have recorded/remembered which shuttle flight it was in support for.

I have worked with a number of designers that have worked in the space program. My first lead Engineer was a Saturn V designer in Huntsville, he had some stories to tell Also, an acoustics fellow who designed antennas for the Mercury spacecraft, a fellow who worked the lunar rover design for Boeing, a LEM environmental engineer that helped work the CO2 issue on Apollo 13, (a lot of ties to the LEM as Gulfstream was originally a Grumman facility), a Space Shuttle wing designer and Space Shuttle pilot that is now part of the Gulfstream team.

I just came back from the Challenger memorial at KSC (see the post - Challenger 20th Anniversary at KSC-in News & Events, it has photos). Another reason to live in the south it is only a four hour drive to KSC and eight to Huntsville. The memorial has moved me to keep the spirit of space exploration thriving, otherwise those who have given the ultimate sacrifice have done so in vain.

Well this has become to long, I am going to have to learn to keep it short. To my Canadian bothers up North from one in the US eh! Spread the thrill of Space Exploration, it’s the “Real Stuff”.

Hi Fred. Good to hear from you and welcome to the Cs Family!!!! Don't worry once a Canadian always a Canadian. You may not have to shovel rain but you may have to carry it out in buckets!!!!!!!!!!
Wow a career in Aerospace. It nice to see you doing what you love.

Thanks for adding to this thread.

I will be post this under news as well

The Canadian Space Agency and its achievements are a point of pride for all Canadians.

The Markham Museum in Markham Ontario ... Near the city of Toronto is currently hostingit's newest exhibit "Space and Heroes" celebrates space travel and it's heroes, providingaccess to the personal reactions of astronauts at the wonder and majesty of the space exploration experience. Visitors can learn about space travel through artwork created by astronauts as well as artifacts actually worn and handled by them.

STARDAZE Space Weekend (February 24-26) is a upcoming special event at the museum where people can learn more about the space industry. It's educational - with planetarium shows, telescoping, and workshops - and will also offer thrilling opportunities to meet Canadian Astronaut Dr. Ken Money and other celebrities from the space industry.

Some of the items that are on display .... (Apollo 12) Alan Bean's painting "My brother Jim Irwin"Space suits, Flags and patches carried to the moon. Paintings by Apollo 11 astronaut Mike Collins.

Markam Museum is located at 9350 Hwy 48 ( at 16th Avenue ).(905)-294-476 or visit www.markham.ca under "Attraction".

On Saturday 25th. It is planned that Dr. Money will give a talk for (30 Minutes) at 2:00pmThen followed by a meet and greet (30 Minutes-1 Hour)

On the Sunday 26th .... We plan to have Space Artist John Platt ... Doing a painting at the event. We also plan to have a guest speaker Dr. Michel Finch, Associate Professor, University of Waterloo.

The Exhibition is planned to be held till November 2006.

"Come and see where the future began"

If planning a trip in the near future to Toronto. Strongly suggested that a phone call be made to the museum to check on it's hours. (Currently open 9am to 5pm) Mon to Fri (Winter Hours)

Hi. My name is Barry Lowe. I'm originally from Vancouver, but relocated to Denver about 6 years ago.

I've been collecting for about 10 years (mostly Alan Bean prints, plus some other autographed pictures), and first found out about CollectSpace in '99 I believe it was.
