Hi Folks,Just wanted to share a very moving and yes most recent sighting of Astronaut John Glenn that you do not hear much about. My best friends son was tragically killed in Afghanistan on Mother's Day (May 8th) last. In fact his mom got news 9:30 pm that night when a Navy Chaplain and Marine Gunnery Sergeant appeared at her door to present the sad news in person. The yong man died bravily performing a Special Operations mission in the Mountains of Afghanistan engaged in a firece firefight w/ Taliban rebels. I do not want to get longwinded in details but he died a TRUE hero.. Well his wake, MASS was Sunday in Farifax, Va. and burial Monday at Arlington National Ceremony. On Sunday, Astronaut (and retired Lt. Col USMC) John Glenn along with his wife Annie arrived at the funeral home in Fairfax, Virginia for tihs young Man's ake to present this young mans parents the Purple Heart and then proceeded to actually lay the Purple Heart in this young mans open casket placing it gently in his arms.. It was a incredible moment and one so dignified that it brought me to tears. You do not really hear much about these kinda unannounced events but felt this was so moving and decent that it was worth sharing with those in the Space Community. Less we ever forget even the best of the best take time occasionally to honor a fallen soldier, quietly and without fanfare or publicity. It was a selfless act by a legend to a fallen fellow Marine (a Marine's Marine) who died a heros death and saved many lives of his own men through his sacrifce in this firefight. The exploits of this young man were simply incredible with his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery atracting hundreds if not even a Thousand people last Monday. The name of this brave soul was Lance Corporal Nicholas Kirven of Fairfax, Virgina. God Bless Nick..!! and thank you John Glenn for taking the time to honor him! |

Amen to all of the above. We are free only due to the sacrifice of these great people--both those that lived and those that did not.------------------ Don |

Hi,Thanks so much for the nice comments for the grieving parents. Its been very tough as one can imagine for them. My original post was full of typos as it was a bit hard to key and think at the same time so my apologies. I forwarded this link to the family and they are grateful for the kind words and thoughts. I wanted to share this story simply because it was one of the most moving events I have ever witnesed when John Glenn presented this young Lance Corporal with his Purple Heart. God Bless you Nick. You will be so missed and thank you John Glenn for taking the time to personally honor this young fallen American hero without any publicity or fanfare! I will never forget that.. Always faithful.. A soldiers creed! |

You don't need to be an American to understand this. John Glenn is a legend not only because of the headlines he has generated, but also because of the way he has lived his life out of the headlines. |

Thank you for this posting on these two American Heroes. Our family will never forget Nicholas, as he was much admired in his every day life as well as his military life. A true inspiration for all. Thank you John Glenn for recognizing this too. |
