Looking back at 2004, I was wondering what bargains people managed to find themselves, and also what bargains you managed to miss out on?

My personal bargain of 2004 was a small one - a Shepard ISP on a nice NASA glossy of him in his Mercury space suit at a reasonable price. The seller hadn't posted a photo, and the scan he sent on request showed a black and white photo. Not bad, I thought, but when it arrived I found it was in glorious color!

On the other hand I'm still kicking myself for two major bargains that I missed out on:

The Apollo 13 Rescue arrow decal. I know some people thought it was fake but I'm sure it is real and one of the nicest items I've ever seen listed on eBay... except I missed it. At least a fellow CSer got it though!

More recently I missed out on a Neil Armstrong signed Apollo 11 crew litho that sold for peanuts but which I'm also sure was genuine. Luckily it also went to a fellow CSer.

Anyone else find themselves a nice bargain in 2004? Anyone else still kicking themselves for missing something?

I AM the proud owner of the Ap 13 flown Rescue decal from the outside of the CM and I have to say, not only was it the find and relative bargain of the year, but it is now the pride of my collection. It has been reviewed and verified (as best one can) by some of the authorities who contribute to cS.
Also picked up an absolutely mint set of Mercury 7 signatures on a presentation framed photo. Found it on abebooks.com as it was being sold by a bookstore owner!
All appearing on my website..when I get round to it.

I picked up the 6 volume Astronaut set of Easton Press books for about 50% above orginal list price. That was found at a little beach bookstore down the road. They were all still wrapped in their original plastic packing material. The copy of Lost Moon was not sealed all the way so I slipped the book out. The signature on the book is fine. But Jims sig on the COA looks like a Jim Larry! I have been meaning to scan it and share, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Snared a nice first printing in dj of We Seven signed by Gordon Cooper and Wally Schirra, complete with original photos of them signing it, off eBay for $76; sure seems like a bargain to me.

I was lucky enough to snare a 1967 Apollo Training Manual on ebay for just over 30 bucks, that has to be my best buy of 2004.

(Lol, just checked my emails and found out I have just won a Shuttle Flight Operations Manual on ebay for $7.50. I hope the year continues like this !)

I too found a copy of We Seven, signed by Shepard, Slayton, Carpenter, Schirra, Cooper, Glenn, Betty Grissom, and Bill Dana, on ebay for 75.00. I've since had Guenter Wendt, Sam Beddingfield, Cece Bibby, Dee O'Hara, and Jim Lewis added to it.

There have been several other good finds as well.

I would have to say my number one 'miss' of the year was also the Apollo 13 Hatch Decal. I bid, but it wasn't enough and I feel that I seriously underestimated the fact that others felt it was legit. I thought my snipe of $1176.12 was a sure win...congrats to you Paul B.! By the way, out of mere curiosity, what was your max bid?

My 'deal' of the past year were two complete flight experiments that were flown and part of Spacelab SLS-1/STS-40 (Life Sciences). I have authenticated them as being flown and even managed to find a photo of Mission Specialist M. Rhea Seddon using one of the units within the belly of Columbia. I am already in the process of applying power to one of the units for display.

I guess my bargain for 2004 was a model that I bought from a fellow collectspacer. I got a near mint/mint condition 1/200 Space Shuttle Columbia desk model with the white tank for just over $100.00. It is an original 1981 issue..Beautiful piece..looks great in my cabinet.

My bargain of the year was a large (8"X12") American flag flown aboard Apollo 12 to the Ocean of Storms I purchased from Mr. Gordon.

I was given a WCFields signed portrait from the 70's; as well, I gave a fellow cS member a great low cost deal on a 75th anniv. Lindbergh print signed by Neil Armstrong, etc. Smiles all around.
GREAT topic for discussion.

Actually, I think the best deal for me from 2004 was probably the one my wife found. She found the 3 volume set of "A Man on the Moon" at a "crazy days" type of sale locally for about $30. I didn't even know this coffee table type of set existed. I already had the one-volume book with all of the excellent text by Chaikin, but the set she bought is full of wonderful photos and other illustrations. Magnificent!

I also found a copy of "Moon Shot" with a bookplate signed by Shepard (actually, I was tipped off by a co-worker) at a local Thrift Store for $50. I thought that was pretty good.

Attending the Sims/Hankow show in Burbank--though a significant expense--was the experience of a lifetime. Priceless.

A good year, I'd say.

My biggest miss was the pair of Phase IV shuttle-suit gloves on ebay that went for about $800. Still smarting over that one.
My biggest bargain was the pair of Alan Shepard gloves, also on ebay, for $2400. One of those occasions when you put in a 'just in case' bid, but don't think you have a chance.

Cheers,
Matt

Matt I didn't know YOU were the winner of those gloves - WELL DONE, they've gone to a good home. I'm just getting a bit worried about your glove-fetish <LOL>.

Biggest misses of 2004...... Misssed out on meeting Gordon Cooper at Autographica by a matter of days.

Secondly, a NASA certified Apollo 17 flown silk US flag on ebay. It was snapped up by a fellow Cs'r (I think) with a $750 "Buy Now" option.....

Regards,

Rick.

I got a real bargain when I bought what I thought was 6 Mercury BS autopen Vintage lithos and a vintage signed John Glenn business suit litho in the last Aurora Galleries auction.

When it arrived I was stunned, thrilled and shocked to find that the Shepard wasn't an autopen but a vintage early 1960's genuine signature and to top it all, the Scott Carpenter was also an early vintage signature.

An absolute STEAL at $80 plus $16 buyers premium for the 7 lithos. This means I'm now looking forward to the next Aurora auction with great anticipation.

Biggest miss was the same as Rick's, missing out on meeting Gordon Cooper at Autographica. RIP Gordo!!

Cheers, Derek

Oh, and I suppose meeting Buzz Aldrin in Chicago and getting a couple freebie autographs from him on a photo and my Apollo 11 DVDs from Spacecraft Films would be a bargain, since it was just for the price of a couple bucks admission.

Besides collecting, I had a nice highlight. When our local paper of The Space Coast personally asked Michael Foale, aboard the ISS, a question for me! And then seeing the ISS so beautifully & brightly two mornings around New Year's. Plus I got to collect a nice find with the help of Andrew Chaikin & Max Zubrin, who I got to meet together!

I thought my best deal was an Apollo 15 Final Flight plan and press kit for 150. I think I paid too much for a final flight plan for Apollo 11, 700 , but it is awesome and I'm hooked. I just got my son to meet Buzz about a month ago and he was extremely nice. Hopefully he will treasure the personalized pics that I am accumlating for him.

My deal of the year was finding on ebay a STS61-E, Asro-1 paylaod patch. I got it for $4.61 from "Down Under". I do not know how it got there but it's mine now. Now if I can only find a real STS61-E crew patch that would be great.

Best deals: Getting one of the three flown Apollo 7 Silver Snoopy's from Walt Cunningham. John Wardell and the estate of Charles Schultz have the other two. All three are now in very good hands. Kim did an incredible job framing the tie pin sized item with its related documentation. Kudos to Novaspace, as always.

Getting a vintage 1969 Snoopy Astronaut doll [complete with box] at the Swann Auction signed by Stafford. Adding Cernan to it at Burbank.

Biggest misses: Trying to outbid Larry McGlynn for Walt's PPK at the Swann Auction. However, I did bid it up by several hundred dollars just to annoy Larry.

Not spending enough time talking to Gordo at the Burbank show, even though I was sitting between he and Wally at the signing tables for hours. He did like my silver sharpie and attempted to swipe it several times which kept an ongoing joke going during the show.

Donotech, Well done on the Apollo 15 FP, I have one the same that Al Worden signed for me a few years ago and its a fave of my collection.

Plus good job on the Apollo 11 FP, was that the same one I was bidding for on ebay ? It looked in great condition to me, and you got it for only a few more dollars than I was willing to pay. A great piece to get signed by Buzz Aldrin !

I have been looking for the Great Moments in Aviation History print from 1982 for about five years. I thought that it would be a great compliment to my Space and Aviation collection. I see Naval Aviation in Space for sale regularly, but not this one. I think the printings are about the same at 1000, but for some reason it's not easy to find. Does anyone know why? I found one on ebay recently and with print now firmly in hand I am thrilled. Except for a small tear in the upper margin it is in great condition. I am not sure, but I think I got it for a good price, but there are no recent comparables to really know for sure. The link to the auction is below. Dean

How did I miss that? Ugghhh... Yeah, that was a fair price. I have seen a website that stocks them for $5k USD. Whether or not anybody buys them is beyond me.

I jumped once to buy one at $1k but the offer went away. The woman selling them got it in her head I was a friend of her ex-husbands trying to buy it back from her, after the divorce, in which she took them from him out of spite. I believe the dealer told me that in that case she said they weren't for sale at any price. Aint love grand? Yeah, you got a good deal... Wow!

The best value (not the biggest bargain) our family found relating to space in 2004 was our “Astronauts on the Mississippi” vacation arranged by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, where we heard and met Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Wally Schirra, Al Worden and Bill Dana (see www.collectspace.com/ubb/Forum23/HTML/001313.html for my detailed posting).

The biggest “bargain” I found relating to space in 2004 was attending the two day Public Hearing by the President’s “Moon to Mars” Commission in New York City. I heard presentations by leaders of JAXA, ESA, CSA and NASA and others, had brief conversations with (and signings by) Buzz Aldrin, Rick Hauck, Marc Garneau and Pete Aldridge, met several space education/exploration advocates, was selected to be one of five people to comment to the Commissioners during the “Public Comment” session and heard the public deliberation statements by the Commissioners. The cost to me was train fare.

All times are CT (US)
