Recently my wife and I were in Memphis, Tennessee, and we called into the Visitor's Bureau to check on a river cruise. In the centre they have a marvellous, large bronze sculpture of Elvis Presley, and another of B.B. King. I had a look at both, but just as I was about to walk away from King's statue I happened to spot the sculptor's name engraved into the bronze base. The name was Ed Dwight, and it was a delightful surprise, as Ed was once the very first African-American astronaut candidate, whose story has been told in a few recent books, and perhaps best in "They Had a Dream" by J. Alfred Phelps. I knew he had later turned his eye to the arts and was well known for his work. It was just a nice and truly unexpected surprise to see this wonderful statue and to note that Dwight had crafted this very imposing piece.[This message has been edited by ColinBurgess (edited November 28, 2004).] |

I believe that was mentioned in Deke Slayton's book; nice to see someone was able to view his work. | |
