On the 12th November 2004 a new domino toppling world record was set in Leeuwarden,Netherlands when 3,992,397 dominos were toppled by a multi-national team. What's that to do with space ?
Well, one of the major spectacular sections (containing tens of thousands of different coloured dominos) was a space-themed event.
The last domino from another section toppled the space themed start domino. This released a 'lunar landing craft' which had a small 'spike' at its base. As the model descended onto the 'moon' its spike caught a start domino and the rest then began toppling over to produce a comical moon - with the model lander on it !Then , a model astronaut - suspended on guide wires - was activated by one of the 'running' dominos. The astronaut then simulated the moon kangeroo jumps ! As he 'touched down' on the floor his boot caught another domino - setting off a domino chain reaction. He did this several times. Each of these reactions then produced - by falling dominos - images of various, colourful planets (Saturn,Mars).
Brilliant!
There were other major themes in this world record attempt including dominos falling in water, a "working volcano' (that was just incredible) ,the Rome Coliseum and the Hippodrome - where several lanes of dominos raced each other around the circuit! Just great !
But this wasn't the only space themed event for dominos.
Back in May 1986 the Hemophilai Association managed to topple 300,000 dominos across six continents using satellite communications. The first dominos were toppled in Atlanta before being satellite linked to Rio de Janiero where another large section was toppled before being satellite linked to sections in London,Nairobi,Tokyo,Sydney before return to Atlanta for final section.
Maybe we could have the next Domino world record start out on board the ISS ?
How would we get dominos topple in 'weightlessness?
Any ideas guys?
