Thought I'd post these today in honor of the 45th anniversary of Able and Baker's spaceflight. Most of the time, the top of the monument has a banana or two left by tribute payers. ------------------ http://www.hatbag.net/blog.html "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

Does anyone know how long Able lived after returning to Earth and what injuries caused his/her death? David, thanks for posting the photos. It's nice to know there's a monument there like that one. |

Rob,Sadly, Able (an American-born rhesus monkey) did not survive very long after her history-making flight with little Baker. Four days after their recovery at sea a mishap occurred while doctors were putting her under anaesthetic to remove some electrodes implanted in her skin. Able died without regaining consciousness. Where is this marker at? I live in southeast Kansas and I seem to remember a marker at the Independence Kansas Zoo stating that Able had been born there. Does anyone know if that is correct? Mike |

Sorry... I should have included that in my post. This monument is in front of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. Can't help as far as the one in Kansas.------------------ http://www.hatbag.net/blog.html "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |
