Hello guys. I love to attend estate/garage sales and flea markets and being from New Jersey (15 minutes outside of NYC) is a great hot bed for sales almost every weekend. In these parts, almost every garage sale has tons of things like New York Yankee baseball memorabilia and one friend have even found a Babe Ruth signature stored away in a forgotten attic. My question to you is this- Since we all collect space memorabila- Whats the best space item you have found at a sale? Any Houston or Florida residants find a treasure trove? I am sure some of the items are currently up for sale so I would understand you might not want to reveal that it was found at the bottom of a $1 box. But for those who found things they will never part with....Are there any good stories out there? What have ya found? Me...It would have to be an original b/w 8x10 photo from the Apollo 15 NY parade of the guys in their parade car (I believe I bought it from the photographer). A great shot! Anyone else? Anything good? |

Usually I only find Life magazines, but a couple weeks ago I picked up an Apollo 8 medallian with flown metal on the original foldout certificate for a couple bucks. That made all the hundreads of other estate sales worth it.I also got a signed Irwin book a few years ago for a buck or two. Good times - Danno |

A used book store near JSC in Houston suddenly got a complete set of Apollo mission reports and science reports for $5 each about 15 years ago. I didn't have much money with me (this was before ubiquitous ATM's & cards) so I just bought the Apollo 11 misssion report. By the time I got more money and went back, the rest were gone...[This message has been edited by micropooz (edited April 15, 2004).] [This message has been edited by micropooz (edited April 15, 2004).] |

Some Houston finds: Several of what later turned out to be Lion Bros. Apollo 15 patches for $1 each. Apollo team 10th reunion Noritake tea cup (handpainted). CERV and TDRSS mugs for 24 cents. Several humdred (not kidding) pounds of NASA books that I need to start selling under Buy, Sell, Trade. I'm getting married soon and have to get two houses to fit into one. [Merging Renaissance Festival stuff like suit of armour, boots, swords, daggers, etc. don't mix well with all my space papers, flown Mir items, flown shuttle items, covers, patches, models, autographs, etc. Then there's the Mac vs. PC issue. What a mess! Plus it all has to be cat-proofed so all my kitties can lay on whatever isn't locked away. I'm glad he likes my Alan Bean prints.] |

I've found a few treasures. STS93 and 103 signed crew photos at a flea market for $2. http://www.geocities.com/tegwilym2/collection/autographs/sts-93.jpg http://www.geocities.com/tegwilym2/collection/autographs/sts-103.jpg I also found a nice framed poster of one of Alan Bean's prints for $2.50. Another time I found a copy of that NASA "Apollo Expeditions to the Moon" book for a quarter. The woman didn't have change for a dollar, so she just said "take it for free, my husband will be happy somone wanted it". I then sold it for $75 on eBay! (I have my own copy already). Hehe! Tom

Hehe! I know how much you like my Alan Bean poster. I didn't do too well with garage sales last summer, I kept finding useful stuff for my new house. The garage sale season is upon us again though. Maybe I'll get lucky this year. Oh, other items I found at Half Price books - Signed copies of: Jerry Linenger's book, Edgar Mitchell, Gene Kranz, Robert Morgan (Memphis Belle B-17), Brian Shul (SR-71), and Jim Lovell. It never hurts to peek at the first few pages in space books in used bookstores! Tom |
