Well I just made a neat discovery that I wanted to share with everyone. I bet most of the more experienced members of this group already know this and have probably known about it for 9 years. If so just call me slow. I just finished watching Apollo 13 for about the 20th time. My 10-year-old daughter has seen parts of Apollo 13 but she has never really sat down and watched it. Earlier this week I watched Gladiator with my 15-year-old daughter. She had seen parts of it but she was having trouble following the plot so she asked if I would watch it with her. Tonight it was time for my youngest to watch a movie of her choice so we watched Apollo 13. At the end of the movie Tom Hanks has stepped off the helicopter and is shaking hands as he walks along the carrier Iwo Jima. At one point he shakes the hand of a Navy Officer in a white uniform. At Hanks passes this officer you get a short look at the officer and it is the real Jim Lovell that is playing the officer. I had never noticed that before. I know others have probably known about this since the movie came out but just in case there are others out there that are 9 years behind the times take a look at the ending of the movie. Am I right? Is that the real Jim Lovell? Mike

That is the real McCoy, Jim Lovell. He is listed in the credits too. I believe he played the, "Captain," naturally!------------------ Warm Regards Douglas Henry Enjoy yourself and have fun.... it is only a hobby! [This message has been edited by Aztecdoug (edited March 07, 2004).] |

Marilyn Lovell is also in the film - within the crowd of spectators at the launch if I recall correctly. I'm not sure if you are watching the DVD version but if so be sure to check out the commentary tracks. The one done by Captain and Mrs. Lovell is a lot of fun (for example, it points out both of the cameos).Jonathan [This message has been edited by NC Apollo Fan (edited March 07, 2004).] |

If memory serves, Marilyn Lovell is in a row or 2 behind Kathleen Quinlan, who portrays her in the movie, during the LIFTOFF scene. |

That's one of my favorite parts of the film. Hanks has a great reaction to whatever Lovell says to him. I've always wondered if they knew that they weren't using sound in that scene, If Jim said something personal to Tom. I know he said he was originally uneasy with Hanks in the role, but gradually accepted him after meeting him. |

We already talked about Real Astronauts in films/movies in an earlier thread ... I remember it mentioned Story Musgrave in " Mission to Mars " |

I don't remember the name of it, (I think it was a TV movie), but it was about a moonbase and Pete Conrad had a prominant role in it. |
