Yesterday's UK Independent newspaper carried a good two page colour spread that basically supported Hubble and urging for it to be serviced and kept in space.It even carried the 'correct' image of the far distant galaxy that Hubble had imaged and which is believed to have formed just 750 million years after the birth of the universe. A lot of news agencies have been using 'any' Hubble deep space image to portray this far distant one instead of the correct one.
The ones in Google's sci/tech news area were especially misleading earlier on in week to casual viewers. |

Well....with a presidential election this year in the U.S., people who are currently at the top making the decisions won't necessarily be there when the shuttle repair mission rolls around.Not to say that the current administrator hasn't done a good job, because I for one believe he has. But he won't necessarily still be there in January 2005. NASA Administrator is a presidential appointment as well as President of NASA being the sitting Vice President of the United States. There's hope for Hubble in more ways than one! |

Hubble will not be serviced again by NASA. The orbit is not forgiving on the return if there are numerous jet failures, abort sites in Africa have to be kept open just for Hubble (ISS flights abort to US or Europe), etc. It's all laid out in this streaming video from a Canadian interview with American space expert James Oberg.Here's a copy of what I put out under another topic thread last week:
