I just received this letter from John Young's office: " .... Capt. Young.... is not autographing at this time". There was a rumour that as he was on the board investigating the Columbia accident that he was too busy to sign - but is this now a case that he no longer signs? Brian |

He has always been a very very reluctant signer. When he came to Scotland some years ago, I went around with him to several venues including the press conference. It was only after sitting and talking at length with his wife at one his venue lectures (she'd heard it all before from John so any topic of all things about herbal medicines!! - was welcome change) that she persuaded John to sign the Apollo-16 lunar surface flag I have - which already had Charlie Dukes signature on at that time. He would not sign any photos or other items that were presented to him on that day. I think he only signed the flag because he recognised the item had been with them (actually with Charlie) and Charlie had already signed? However, signing or not, I still enjoyed John's talks and had some good chats on/off that day . He is a technical engineer at heart and speaks very authoratively, engineering - wise, about future space missions and exploration. Talk knowlingly and technically about space engineering and he'll love it :-) Whether he will sign - is another matter :-) He's in my top four Apollo crew members (Charlie Duke,Dave Scott and Harrison Schmitt being the other three) The latter because I'm well into geology/selenology and I enjoyed his geological interpretations on the Moon and in his subsequent science papers and lectures .

I would never argue that Mr. Young or anybody else doesn't have the complete right to decide not to sign. Certainly, the work he is doing at NASA is far more important than whether I or anyone else gets the autograph they want! I just wonder if the letter applies to all of us who have been waiting a year or so for a response. If it does, oh well. Bummer.------------------ Don |

My daughter just had a success with Young this week. It is a newer portrait, closer up, and his jumpsuit is missing the Gemini 10 and Apollo 10 patches. She's very, very happy! Hang in there- Rob |

I am hoping that perhaps after Mr Young retires that he will sign items then, even if it is for a fee.But for now it looks as if he's never going to retire. ;-) |

I'm glad to see that there was a reply. I'm curious too as to how long it took. I sent off for one this week. Pam |

Hi Pam & Andrew:She used the address listed under Collectspace's Resources' Astronaut Addresses list. The response time was a little over one month. I have NEVER been able to figure out why one letter gets a relatively quick response while others are delayed...that's one of the great mysteries of this hobby. Hang in there and good luck! Rob |
