Folks,

I have just been advised that Detlev Van Ravenswaay has had a heart attack. Detlev appears to be resting confortably in the hospital.

For those of you who don't know Detlev, he is an excellent space artist from Germany. Some of his work includes paintings of our voyages to the moon and potential voyages to other planets.

Those of us who know Detlev have found a real gentleman with a termendous artistic talent.

I hope you will join me in wishing Detlev well and pray for his successful recovery.

I hope Detlev has a speedy recovery and is able to rest comfortably now. I had the pleasure to meet him not that long ago - - a real gentleman, and a true asset.

I heard from SpaceMike yesterday about Detlev. Mike has been checking Detlev's email and found my email to Detlev where I asked him if something was up because I had not heard from him lately nor saw any of his pieces listed in Astroauctions lately. I just had a feeling something was up. Just in case Mike gets to busy and doesn't pass along my good wishes I just wanted to say that Detlev is a fine and decent human being and that I wish him a speedy recovery. My prayers and best wishes are with him.

Many thanks for the good wishes to Detlev.
He is my best friend and I know him since 25 Years.Cause he has no family I visit him together with his girlfriend in a special facility of the heart hospital today.
He is very tired and has sometimes blackouts but the doctors are sure that he is ok in some weeks.
I will tell him your good wishes in the next days I visit him again.
Thanks to all

For those of you who may not know Detlev Van Ravenswaay. He is a very talented space artist as well as a collector and contributor to the space collecting hobby. I had planned to write a piece on his work, but due to recent events, I thought it might be nice to show some examples of his work here on this thread.

As a space art collector, I think he is one of the more creative space artists in the genre today. Detlev's use of Worhal's pop art style for the piece "Buzz Aldrin Pop" shows that, unlike most space artists, he has been willing to experiment with alternative techniques.

Buzz Aldrin Pop (alternatively titled Man on the Moon)

Yet, he has done some nice work utilizing the more traditional landscape style used by most space artists. Paintings such as Mars from Phobos and April 12th 1961, "I feel good" are such examples.

April 12th 1961

Detlev's training as an illustrator show in his ability to minic other methods and techniques as in a work entitled "In the Glare of the Sun." A work that copies the style of Robert McCall as an experiment in color and technique.

Finally, in what I think is Detlev's finest work does his training, his style and knowledge of composition come together for the piece entitled "The Earth and 50 Stars."  This piece sold in the final Superior auction. The painting that is shown here is a early practice piece that is part of my collection.

Detlev, besides being a genuinely nice gentleman, is also a very talented artist who's work is not well known to the space collecting community. Those of you who are interested in his work should look at his website www.vanravenswaay.com and view some of the many examples of his work.

I know we hope that Detlev recovers completely, so we can see more wonderful examples of his artwork in the future.

I forgot one more thing about Detlev's paintings. I apologize for omission.

The painting "In the Glare of the Sun" has flown in digital form, under the alternative title of "In the Beginning," to the International Space Station.

So Detlev's paintings on space have actually been out there.

I have some new information on Detlev.

I talked with his girlfriend this morning. It turns out that Detlev was taken to the hospital by helicopter about Noon on Thursday.

According to his girlfriend, Detlev was operated on from 5:00PM to Midnight. The doctors performed bypass surgery and installed a new heartvalve. He is feeling better. It is unknown when he will be released from the hospital.

She added that she wants to thank everybody for their support and will plan to bring all the emails to Detlev when he is stronger.

Dear Friends -

thank you very much for so many nice wishes and prayers, which seem to meet the right address. After 5 weeks in hospital I am at home again, but will leave soon for a rehabilitation trip.

Thank you again,
Detlev
