Just an FYI -- The Oct. 2003 issue of Scientific American contains a piece by James Oberg on the anticipated first manned Chinese orbital mission. The article is entitled "China's Great Leap Upward." The article anticipates China linking up with a small space station within two years (a program that suggests a variation of the MOL program). |

I wish them luck. What we need to get more funding for NASA is someone to compete with. |

I certainly wish the Chinese well, but at this point, I wouldn't appropriate an extra dollar for NASA. It needs to be destroyed in order to be saved.Shuttle delenda est.

I don't care for the Chinese government, but I wish their space program and astros well. I'm probably the oldest space enthusiast on Earth who doesn't have the privilege of having remembered watching a live moonwalk. I'd like to see one someday, or at least something comparable. Things are looking up (Mars rovers in January, etc) but you are right about a little competition being a good thing. The American people won't have much patience for screwing around in low Earth orbit when there are Chinese astros orbiting the Moon. |

You're correct about the MOL-like space station ( it was already featured on BIS' monthly " Spaceflight " magazine ) ... On the subject of a manned mission to the Moon or Mars I can only say; "Hope to see one in my lifetime ... don't matter if it's Chinese, Japanese, American , Russian, International ..." ( Héy it's almost 50 years since Apollo 11 ) |

I hope for the safety of any taikonaut the Chinese send up, but I do not wish them well in their space endeavors."Like many other nations, China's exploration of outer space is purely for peaceful purposes," a spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry said during a regular news briefing. "China has always supported the `non-weaponization' of space. China will not take part in any arms race in space." And there's a lovely little bridge in Brooklyn I can show to anyone that might be interested in purchasing. -chet |
