i have several signed prints that are framed but some get a 'wavy' appearance from when the print was unrolled/rolled. this also happens to thinner paper items when framed (i do my own matting and framing). any of you have your items dry mounted or is there another way of safely doing this? some of these systems at the frame shop use heat....will that disturb paint pen or sharpie signatures?

Hi there:

This is a very good question and one that is worth thinking through prior to making the leap to dry mount.

Please see the resources section of this website and check out the article I wrote entitled, "Exhibit Space." It chronicles some of the methods I explored when turning my collection into an exhibit for our local museum.

I have had approximately 25 signed 16 x 20 photos dry mounted and have been pleased with the overall result. For me, the process was worthwhile and produced some very crisp looking display pieces. I got most of my advice from Kim Poor...it's in the article. Perhaps Robert can help provide a link here.

After you check it out, please feel free to post any follow-up questions here or e-mail me at Rsumowski@aol.com and I'll be glad to share with you what I learned in the process.

Best of luck!

thanks rob! lots of info there. i bought a new mat cutter for less than $100 from a supplier in atlanta. it's incredibly easy to cut your own mats. i too use only museum rag mat. i'll ask around at some local framers to see what they have....thanks!!!
