Okay SPACEfans, this is a 1966 photo. http://mix.msfc.nasa.gov/IMAGES/MEDIUM/6640863.jpg Any guesses? Sorry, no prizes, just the satisfaction of knowing what a great memory you still have. Rizz [This message has been edited by Rizz (edited February 24, 2003).] |

I cheated, and found the answer on the web. But I won't spoil the fun here.Of course, Rizz, you could extend the challenge and ask who the other two guys are. That would keep us busy for a while. Bill |

I would guess that is Von Braun in the driver seat because that particular lunar rover precursor used to be on display at the Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville... |

Good guesses. You guys are good!"In this June, 1966 photograph, Marshall Space Flight Center Director, Dr. Wernher von Braun test drives the Mobility Test Article (MTA), a developmental vehicle built by the Bendix Corporation to test lunar mobility concepts. The data provided by the MTA helped in designing the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), developed under the direction of the Marshall Space Flight Center. The LRV was designed to allow Apollo astronauts a greater range during lunar exploration missions and served its purpose during the last three Apollo lunar missions in 1971 and 1972." Thanx for playing Rizz |

Oh Rizz - you must stop it :-))That brought saltwater to my eyes. I had to do a super quick article for Spaceflight back in 1966 that featured Lunar Roving Vehicles - including that one,the MOLAB and the one man flyers being proposed back then. The article had me stopping up almost all night in order to get if off in the mail next day to meet tight publication deadlines. No internet's then. Also, all communication with Grumman and Martin and others was all done by international airmail. That mail (snail mail ) takes about 1-3 days on average. Back then, about 3-4 weeks!! Telexes were expensive internationally. Anyway, got the article done and was published. I've a PDF for anyone who may be interested. |
